SDMB Visual Changes (IE11)

No, but you did claim that the OP could “fix” it by using another browser. Not work around it, but fix it. This very much implies that you think IE is just fundamentally broken, and the only way to fix a problem with it is to use another browser. That was the type of answer the OP specifically asked not to get.

Whether based on past experience or not, the words you used left you open to the “threadshitting” interpretation. The advice you were given in how to remedy that in the future is sound.

Not that you were out of line or anything–just apparently ignorant of how your message would come across. You at least didn’t say anything bad about the OP, unlike the posts that made Tuba have to step in.

Anyways, my advice would be to see if you can set IE to open the SDMB using “compatibility view.” This will make it look like it did on Internet Explorer 6, which I believe looks pretty much the same as Firefox.

(Yes, I know it was stated before, but no one else provided instructions on how exactly to enable compatibilty view. And I ran out of time to correct my post.)

You don’t think that would have fixed it?

That’s not a fix. It’s a work-around.

So is setting the compatibility setting a fix or a work around?

What about going back to IE10?

What about changing vBulletin?

i just looked at this very thread in IE11 and it looks fine. I did not mess with any settings. It was just as it came. Nothing looks “squished”. The font is actually rendered a bit more clearly (seems a bit darker and more solid) than it is in Firefox.

The only thing that would be a true fix is not available to the consumers - a minor configuration change on the SDMB web server.

The IE compatibility setting is a workaround, but it’s one that affects only the targeted site and nothing else, and requires no additional software or impact to the OP’s computer. Changing browsers is a considerably more drastic workaround that could have many other side effects (some of these from the human factor of adapting to change)

You may not have intended to threadshit, but as a first response to a question of this kind, surely you must appreciate how easily it could be perceived as such.

The perception of my response is closely tied to the perception of the knowledge/skills of the OP.

If you assume, as I did, that asking the SDMB to fix their problem with IE11 implies limited knowledge, then it’s a perfectly reasonable response, some people just aren’t very aware of other options or may not have considered them strongly in the past.

If you assume the OP has full knowledge of other browsers then my response doesn’t look very helpful.

“I have a problem with IE.”

“Fix it by not using IE.”

I believe the only assumption that applied in this case was that the OP needed help in making IE11 work. Your “solution” had absolutely nothing to do with his request.

For some number of problems over the years, that has been the only solution.

And you are so knowledgeable about this particular problem that you knew you had the only possible solution? This posts that follow your brisk reply don’t seem to indicate that you were correct.

Let’s look at what I posted:
“You could fix it by using Chrome or Firefox”

And your interpretation of that post:
“you are so knowledgeable about this particular problem that you knew you had the only possible solution”
Do you think that is a reasonable interpretation of my post?

Sure, when you factor in your post #51, which seems to be a justification of your earlier post.

I’m a Chrome user, but I always update IE ‘just in case’. I just fired up IE11 for the first time, and the SDMB looks just the same there as it does in Chrome.

I don’t agree with your analysis of the whole situation.
