Thought I’d save Khadaji the trouble of starting the new thread here. Ain’t I just a terrific guy?
Actually, I have a question and didn’t want it to get lost in a dying thread.
I was having a little discussion on weight loss with someone a couple of weeks ago, and she suggested a magic weight loss miracle. I am not dubious in the least. She said that doctors and dieticians will never recommend this because of… I don’t even remember the reason she gave.
I don’t know if it will work or not but it sounds tasty.
Weighed in a 140.4 this morning after registering a post-Easter-binge spike of 145 a few days ago. Oh, mama mia! How can I do that to myself? But the last four days I’ve been right on track, thanks due in part to a nasty cold that must have blunted my desire to eat. Thank heaven for small (but odd) favors, I guess.
Good luck to all of you in your dieting endeavors this month.
I have a feeling that diet drink will work about as well as the bowl of cocoa puffs I just ate. At least the cocoa puffs are chocolatey!
I won’t weigh in again until next week as my weigh in day is Sunday and I will be out of town this weekend. My weight will be up next time because of my trip back to Texas I’m sure, being as it is the land of deep fried meats and all.
My double sawbuck is on “quackery”, I’ll hand it over if you can find a reputable doctor able to confirm the existence of hardened fat deposits that inhibit the function of the organs and need to be dissolved by some kind of tea.
I’m a little behind the schedule I’d set for myself back in about October, but the first three months of the year have seen me lose nearly as much as I’d planned - it’s just I started 5½ pounds higher than I intended, so the odd half pound per month less than I intended that I have actually lost is neither here nor there. (Diagram that sentence carefully and you’ll find it actually works.)
Would still like to lose another 21 pounds by the end of May (when I turn 48) and, if at all possible, still another 21 by the end of July or mid-August. It’s now getting to the point that it’s hard to lose ten pounds in a month, though.
In October, Mouse_Spouse started the South Beach diet on his doctor’s recommendation and lost 50 pounds! I’ve been following parts of this diet that are appropriate for a nursing mother and got back to my pre-pregnancy weight. However, I’ve stalled at 145 for over a month now. Any ideas for getting over this hump?
I’ve been losing steadily at around 1-2lbs per week which is good enough for me. I predict a gain tonight at Fat Club though, I’ve been eating all the wrong stuff (I blame my hormones) over the last few days and just craving sweet things. I have to get a grip on this dieting lark and get back to eating properly now, otherwise I’ll end up the size of a house.
In the past couple of months I’ve somehow managed to aquire a social life. This is good for a number of reasons, but gives my stalling out a whole new meaning. My normal routine is to go home from work, exercise, then cook up a healthy meal. Now it’s grabbing a couple of quick slices then meeting someone for coffee (when what I really get is hot chocolate, since I don’t do caffeine) and getting home late, or meeting someone for light lunch or dinner, which never ends up being light.
Reminds me of a fable I heard once about how a King was suffering from lassitude and loss of appetite, and eventually the doctor prescribed three blades of grass every day, to be eaten with the first of the morning dew fresh on them. When this didn’t work at once, the King complained, and the doctor told him that he had to harvest the grass blades himself…
April checkin - 100.8 kg (down from 104.6kg 1 March)
I had hoped to be sub 100kg by now, but ~4kg a month is still ok, and I relaxed a bit over easter. My work pants are a real loose fit, and I have taken an 2-3cm out of my belts. I keep ramping up my workouts, and am still aiming for 90kg-ish as target A, so about 2 months to go. I’ll probably pause then for a bit, before the last 10 kilo assault.
Last night, my wife and I actually discussed how I would stop losing weight at some future unspecified time. The maintaining of my target weight could be an issue - I’ll have to almost double my calorie intake, and if I keep increasing my workout level …
I am determined to do a “burning boats” though - throw out clothes I shrink out of and buy as small as I can get into with the aim of shrink-fitting into them. I’ll do as little replacement as possible till I am at my target, though.
The only issue is, barely anyone has noticed (or at least, said anything). I guess I am losing abdominal fat from inside, so I shrink all round by small amounts, and still look big. And I realised how much subcutaneous fat I carry on my back - lots to come off there. But I will get there.
I haven’t been participating in the weight loss threads for a variety of reasons. Mostly because I haven’t had much time to hang out on the 'dope.
But I have been losing weight. Color me happy to have been in the high 160s for almost a week now (169 to be exact). My secret is this special tea…
No, really I’ve just been drinking less, not over eating and a bit more consistent with my walking routine. I also found this awesome fitness/health/weightloss web site and while the message boards there are ::yawn:: not filled with interesting, handsome/beatiful, intelligent people like the SDMB it does have some other useful tools and I’m enjoying it quite a bit. I know we’re not supposed to promote other message boards/web sites here but there is a wealth of information on this one. I’m hoping this link doesn’t get me into trouble with the powers that be.
And now that I’m back it seems I have a lot to say…
But I thought I’d share something that I discovered this morning. I’ve been trying to help my daughter with her weight loss efforts. She’s very unhappy about her weight/size but struggling with the motivation necessary to stay on track. We were having a conversation about how people gain weight. I was saying that people we see that are 100 lbs or more overweight didn’t get that way quickly, it probably happened gradually over time.
So, to amuse myself, I decided to do the math. Imagine that you gained 10 lbs a year. That’s less than 1 lb a month and little enough that you might not really notice or do anything about for a couple of years. In 5 years you’d be 50 lbs heavier and in 10 years you’d weight 100 lbs more.
Then I decided to figure out how many extra calories you’d have to eat each day to gain 10 lbs in a year. 1 lb = 3500 calories (or so I’ve been told) 10 lbs = 35000 calories. 35000 calories divided by 365 days in a year = 95.89? Could that be right? It takes just a measly 96 extra calories a day to gain 10 lbs a year?
It’s easy, really easy, to let it sneak up on you.
I recently joined Spark too, velvetjones. I don’t track my eating there (I use another site for that) but do track my fitness stuff. The only problem I have with it is that they don’t have strength training on machines in their database. I was able to create my own program, though they don’t give you credit for burning calories during that time. I know that when I’m strength training I’m burning calories. Anyway, I do like the message board and have joined a few teams.
That’s right. Which means that the secret is not just to stick to a reasonable food intake and trust that you’ll exactly maintain your weight - any more than you’d take your car on the road, align it with the centre line, and then shut your eyes for the next ten miles. You have to pay attention to weights and measurements, the same way that you’d correct your steering. It’s not the hundred calories a day that does it. It’s ignoring the slow, steady weight gain.
–Mal, no longer morbidly obese but still looking to lose another thirty-forty pounds.
yellowvalI found SparkPeople by accident googling for a dumbell exercise routine that didn’t require a bench. They had a video and I was happy to see that it didn’t include a chirpy/perky leader and bad disco music. Just a normal person lifting weights and explaining correct form. What a novel approach. My moniker on SparkPeople is jazzqueen because if I can’t be a virtual queen on the interwebs, where can I be queen :D?
They also have a 15 minutes office workout that’s really good. When I start to feel like I’ve been sitting for too long I’ll do some of those.
I’m vsquist on Spark. I’ll look you up and add you as a friend. I’ve been too shy to try to add anyone else yet, since I’m so new. I’m also going to look for that office workout. Some afternoons I get a really bad case of the sleepyheads and that would help immensely.
Small world…I found sparkpeople.com today while I was googling “calorie counter.” I don’t like the excuse thatf they can’t track calories lost due to weightlifting, but I like the food tracking. I’m still learning my way around.
I’m ivylass over there too…I have a page, so add me as your friend if you want. I’m also a member of the 40-something and Knitters sparkteams.
