SDMB Weight Loss Club May '08

I am trying something to lighten the load on my wallet and my belt buckle. I have started cutting the amount of animal protein in my diet by half. I figure I am like most Americans and I eat WAY too much red meat, cheese, etc. so I am reducing my intake by 50% to save calories and money. I will let you know if it works or if I slowly go insane and have the urge to start gnawing on live cows because of a lack of steak.

Too much cheese? Does not compute.

I’ve decided I’m still eating too many calories, so I’m trying to cut back some more. Sigh. I weigh in tomorrow, so I don’t know how the weight’s going.

On a happy note, since tdn brought her up, I’ve gone back to Leslie Sansone to change up my current routine of elliptical/walking. It’s nice to have something else to do. Man, she moves. And giggles. I’d almost forgotten about that. I gave my Sansone videos to my sister years ago, so I had to get a new crop of DVDs (I loooove ebay). I had fun with her this morning.

I am officially at 150 pounds, and I have lost a total of 30 pounds! It has been 4 years since I was at this weight, and I feel like I am in much better shape now than I was then. Definitely a nice change!

Next goal: 140.

Yay!!

I’m at 170 and have a raging case of sciatica.

Yay! I lost another pound at fat club last night which is pretty good going considering the past weekend consisted mainly of eating out (mostly Chinese) and drinking lots of vodka.

This week I will be grabbing my eating plan by the scruff of it’s neck and giving it a good shake.

I haven’t weighed myself this week. I’m not making excuses but I’ve been pulling alternate all-nighters for uni this week, and it’s played hell with my appetite. I’ve been trying to keep all my food intake healthy, but the sleep depreivation means I’m either ravenous or ill just thinking about food.

Ugh, it’s like a constant hangover. Only two more weeks of assessments left though! …then a week long break before exams start. :smack:

On preview, I’d like to add that I am actually making excuses. I can’t wait to get back into my normal routine, where I won’t be able to validate any of my own excuses.

I’ve run every morning this week (6 miles, 5 miles, 6.5 miles) and was feeling pretty good about myself.

Then I went to H&M to look for an outfit, and trying on clothes made me want to rip my skin off.

Now, I feel like crap.

lorene, a lot of the current fashions make a LOT of people look…well, not as great as they could be looking. I look like crap in them too and I’m actual in a normal-low BMI range right now (according to my nurse-practictioner).

That and H & M clothing is CHEAP. A lot of the material is low quality and non-flattering.

Really, when stuff makes my size 0/00/110 lb sister look hideous, it’s probably hideous to begin with.

Between my sister’s graduation and travel to Chicago and back, I haven’t really had a chance to get going on my bikini fitness plans till this Sunday. What a great start though-I’m eating my own food, focusing on lots of salads and vegetables and getting in 2-3 hours of workouts a day, even if it’s just a 4 mile walk in the morning and evening. I rock…and anticipate that things will come along within a couple of weeks. I just need to be a bit better about making it to my weights class.

Also, I’m really liking the KIND Walnut & Date bars for when I’m in a super-big rush.

I’m new to the thread - just joined that fantastic SparkPeople website, and I thank you guys for introducing it to me. I’m “antigen” on there as well, if anyone wants to look me up.

I’m getting chubby, partly because of my work schedule (I wake up at 10-11am, eat before work, have “lunch” at work around 6 or 7 pm, and then end up needing food when I get home at midnight, before falling asleep around 2am. I’m also just lazy, which is why I got a stationary bike to try and force myself to be a little active, even if it’s half-hearted pedaling while watching Family Guy.

Mostly, my pants don’t fit. and the pretty skirts I bought on sale at the end of last spring are not fitting me for this spring. So I’m grumpy. So, gotta lose some weight. Maybe keeping up with you guys will help me out, we’ll see. It does help that my boyfriend is also feeling chubby and has started running most mornings, so now I have to keep up with him, too. It’s one thing to be a chubby couple, another to be the fat one in a couple.

Thanks. I had never been to H&M before, and have heard people rave about it. But you’re right, the quality wasn’t that impressive. And I do know that cheap = poor fit and not flattering.

Be careful not to do too much, there. I know I probably sound like a mother hen, but lower end of normal BMI and 2 - 3 hours of working out every day sounds like a lot.

Don’t worry-2 hours of that are likely to be walking on an incline. I only do 30-45 minutes of stuff like running or elliptical. Plus, I’m…I can’t believe I’m saying…at a very athletic point in my life. I just need to get rid of a bit of belly fat.

I’m sorry you didn’t find something you liked at H&M. Have you tried Anthropologie or Banana Republic? You’ve got to be discriminating and sort of levelheaded when you’re picking out stuff at Forever 21 and H&M. Always keep in mind that just because something doesn’t look good on you, doesn’t mean YOU look bad. When I let go of the self-flagellation it made my life so much better. Thought leadership, baby!

I was doing well with my eating, then I had to work and resorted to fast food for a couple days. Now I am sick and can’t eat anything, except I did manage a Frosty last night. Although I’m sure it will help with initial weight loss, I know when I get over this nausea I will resort to comfort food and other crap that I shouldn’t be eating (like Frostys). Not too mention I feel too crappy to do all the other things I should be doing, like housecleaning.

I thought I had sinusitis but I’m not so sure anymore since it usually doesn’t make me sick to my stomach.

You can always do what I do when events conspire to get me into a fast food place: Grilled chicken sandwich (no mayo) or some kind of salad*. Or, if you count Jimmy John’s as fast food, Hunter’s Club Unwich.

*Salads wouldn’t be so bad if they were more than just a giant pile of lettuce.

Today’s weigh in result: 182.6 pounds.

I’m…at an athletic point in my life, too. I will never, ever wear a bikini (2 kids…), but I am strong and determined.

I was only at H&M because I was panicking about plans I have tomorrow night and nothing to wear. I am so far out of their demographic that I shouldn’t have bothered. Banana Republic or Ann Taylor loft are better bets (yet further away!)

Thanks, again.

Feel better, Wile E.

I’m back and I’m frustrated. I’ve redoubled my efforts at weight loss, working out more frequently (about 35-40 mins 4-5 times a week instead of my previous 2-3 times a week for 30 mins) and have begun really watching what goes in my mouth (coming in right around my WW points target) and I’m GAINING weight. I’ve examined my diet for ways to cut out a few things and so far all I can think of is maybe getting rid of one daily serving of bready stuff so instead of eating bread/pasta/rice four times a day, I’m getting it three times. All my other food comes from fruits, veggies, lean meat and dairy, just as prescribed.

For example, yesterday’s food:

Breakfast: half a whole-wheat mini bagel with garlic whipped cream cheese and a cup of fresh fruit and some black coffee.

Snack: a handful of almonds and a hefty serving of raw carrots.

Lunch: grilled chicken and couscous and raw mixed veggies and low-fat dip.

Snack 2: FiberOne bar & an apple.

Dinner: Fish taco (1 whole-wheat tortilla, 1/4 cup shredded cheese, 1 tilapia filet, a dollop of low-fat sour cream and 1/2 cup salsa) with chile-seasoned fresh corn off the cob and a diet soda.

Maybe I need to lose one of the snacks or scale back so my snacks are only fruits & veggies? My only concern is that if I do that, I won’t be satisfied for very long and I’ll pig out later or I’ll sabotage myself even further.

I’d say I still have about 20 pounds to go. Any suggestions? I’ve added some strength training, too. Maybe after the Memorial Day weekend, I’ll make an appointment with my doctor. I’m just…bummed. This has been going on for about three weeks - I’ve gained about a pound a week. Grrr…

If you added strength training, you may be gaining muscle mass, which weighs more than fat. Try measuring your waist, hips, and thighs and keeping track. As you continue to lift weights, your body will get more toned and you’ll see a loss of inches.

Regarding your diet, I can’t say, since I’m not familiar with WW points. It looks healthy.

What you’re eating sounds fine to me, overlyverbose. You eat better than I do and I’m still losing so …
A few questions/ideas: (Upon preview, I see ivylass already covered some of this, but in fewer words, and much more quickly.)

  • How many calories are you eating every day? Are you getting at least 1200 calories a day? (Looks like you should be judging from the menu you posted from yesterday, but just asking to make sure.) You also might want to consider calorie cycling or at least adding a “cheat” day now and then. Sometimes your body needs a little shock to make it let go of those pounds.

  • Sometimes when you increase/change your exercise routine, it causes your body to retain water for a while. This can cause you to plateau or even gain. When I first started strength training, it took a while for me to start losing for this very reason. Eventually your body gets used to it and lets the extra water go.

  • What are you doing for exercise? Do you mostly do the same thing every time or do you switch it up now and then? As with eating, it sometimes helps to switch things up with your exercise. So, for example, if you usually walk on the treadmill, you might want to switch over to the stationary bike one day a week. You might also want to consider strength training two to three times a week. When you do cardio, you burn fat as well as muscle. Strength training will help you keep that muscle, which is not only denser (and cuter) than fat, but also burns more calories than fat.

  • Are you taking measurements? You could very well be losing inches, in which case the weight is usually soon to follow.

Haven’t checked into the weight loss threads for ages because I’ve been stuck at the 12st barrier but this morning when I weighed myself - 11’13!!!

It’s only taken 2 fucking months but I’ve finally managed to push down through 12st and I’m extremely happy. The change I’ve made recently has been walking a lot more - I bought a WW pedometer and it tells you how many extra points you’ve earned from walking in a day and it has encouraged me to walk everywhere ALL THE TIME.

The next step is for me to restructure my diet a bit - I think the WW ready meals have to go because they’re invariably carby meals and that’s not good to be having in the evening. I’m just off to do my weekly shop and I’m planning on getting thinks like cooked chicken, ham for salads and eggs to make scrambled eggs/omlettes and brocolli (because I like it and it’s high in fibre, and 0 points as well!).

Wish me luck everyone.

I did find some cute capri pants to wear out last night. Black, very slimming, in a size that I am pleased with.

I’m currently between sizes in the jeans that I wear, and I did what I almost never do, and bought the smaller size with the hopes that they will loosen up, both with wearing and with weight loss. I can wear them, and there’s no muffin top or camel toe, but I am self-conscious wearing pants that are that snug.

I’ve been an exercise slug today, mostly due to some back pain, but I did run 8 miles and walked 3 yesterday, so I’m OK with a rest day. Tomorrow’s a long run on my schedule anyhow.
