Down 3 pounds! I’m really happy, because I had stalled the last week or so – my fridge was on the way out, so I couldn’t buy and keep any lettuce around, so my salad intake dropped to pretty much 0. I bought a new one and have resumed my salad-eating ways, so now I’m dropping again.
I’d need to buy a scale to tell you my start/current/goal weight. Basically it’s “small/bigger/smaller”. I gained 30 pounds while I was pregnant, lost that pretty much immediately and then gained it all back plus some extras. I’m terribly lazy and I loves me some carbs.
Here’s hoping! I’ve been doing some Tae Bo, which is really fun. I’ve also recently started Pilates, and I have a bicycle which I plan to ride as weather permits. I need to lay off the soda and add some water to my diet. And now that Alex is mobile, I get to chase him all over the place which is the easier and way more fun that any other kind of exercise.
I think if I quit smoking this whole thing would just be easier…
I’m on vacation in Texas for the next three weeks, so I’ve been a mite worried how my diet was going to be, considering my father and his wife are most certainly not on Atkins. It’s been 24 hours, and I haven’t caved, but there’s all kinds of goodies hanging around. I made an Atkins-friendly dinner tonight of Lemon-Thyme Chicken, Cauliflower Gratin, and Salad Greens with Homemade Blue Cheese Dressing. They really enjoyed it (although right after, Dad asked, “So, what did you make for dessert?”), and hopefully by my cooking meals most nights will help keep them from ordering pizza or taking me out for barbeque (whimper Man, I might have to break one night for some good BBQ Beef, baked beans, coleslaw, and a giant hunk of cornbread).
I also found a Curves just a few minutes away… but they’re closed now until Monday. I am NOT pleased about that. I just hope I can wake up early enough before it gets too warm to run/walk. I’m starting to dabble with the idea of doing the Couch to 5K program, and last night I ran a good 2 minutes or so (broken up into 30 second segments) during a 40 minute walk. Hopefully, I can build on that.
I just need to stay strong against the temptation of biscuits and gravy. And pecan pie.
Oh, and I wore what I’ve been calling “The Proving Jeans”–they fit! Ok, they’re a bit tight in the waist, but it’s not a struggle to button them. Good enough for me to say they fit.
255/211-ish/170
Ah, yes. I’ve got my own pair of proving jeans. I remember that they were tight, even back when they “fit,” so by the time that they fit for real, I’ll be back to where I was and then some.
I haven’t posted in any of the previous threads, but I figure that there’s no time like the present. Unlike most college students, I actually ended up with the Freshman -10 instead of the Freshman +15 this year. When I go home though, there’s such good food! I need to get myself ready for the trial that is Summer break.
I started trying to get 5 - 7 servings of veggies a day last year, and I finally settled on a kind of catch-all recipe for greens: I saute garlic and onions in a little olive oil until they’re transparent, then add chopped mushrooms, zucchini, or any other “meaty” kind of vegetable. Sometimes I’ll add tomatoes, too, and maybe a little steamed/microwaved broccoli (it stays too crunchy for me if I just cook it in the frying pan with the rest). If I feel like it, I’ll sprinkle some nutritional yeast (from the health-food store - a little bit of flour works as a thickener instead) and/or curry powder over the veggies, then throw in kale, swiss chard, mustard greens, chopped spinach, and/or other greens and cook them until they’re just a little past wilted. The kale needs the most cooking, then the chard, the mustard greens, and then the spinach, so if I use all of those, I’ll add them in that order. I sometimes mix in a small amount of cooked noodles (whole wheat, if possible) or serve the greens over rice, and I often top it with browned tofu, but then I’m a vegetarian. I pretty much use whatever veggies I have on hand, although I consider the onions and garlic to be essential.
I’m actually at my goal weight (215/148/150). It took one full year to get there, and I did it through watching my diet (I ate 1800 - 2000 calories a day in the active weight-loss phase) and exercising regularly (aerobics five days a week and weight training once or twice a week). My fitness/weight/body goal for this year is to maintain good eating and exercise habits and, with any luck, to firm up and get less flabby. I keep having to remind myself that I’m basically in recovery right now, and it will take time, probably years worth of time, for my body to get into peak condition. I still can’t trust myself to eat “normally” without keeping track, so I’m going to be monitoring my calorie intake for a while yet, just to be sure I’m not creeping back into bad habits. The nice thing about my activity level now is that I can maintain this weight at just a few hundred calories a day less than I was eating back at my heaviest point.
I hope no one minds if I check in now and then; I love to see the determination and perseverance that the people of this thread have, and it’s helped me to stick to my own plan over the past year or so. You’ve been a part of my success, and I hope I can be a part of yours, too!

Thanks for the info. I would have thought I could loose more than that per week since my weight fluctuates more than that throughout the day.
Is the Atkin’s rate of loss a different thing? 10% in 8 weeks is 3.38 pounds per week for me at 270. 10% would be sweet. - got to go work out now.
Body weight fluctuates up to several pounds over the course of a day, depending on fluid and food intake and output and your activity level. The best time to weigh yourself is first thing in the morning, after urinating, before you’ve done anything else. And when you weigh yourself the next day, it should be at that same time. Keep consistent, and honestly–don’t weigh yourself every day. When the numbers don’t budge after a few days (which will happen now and again), it can be discouraging. Weigh yourself once or twice a week.
Also, if you’re doing Atkins, get yourself a measuring tape, and keep measurements. There are times when you may not be losing in pounds, but if you’re keeping up with the diet and exercise, you may be losing inches/gaining muscle. The one thing I’ve noticed with Atkins, is that I’ve lost a tremendous amount of inches (30" overall), but have only lost about 45 pounds.
Now, the way I’ve heard the weight loss rate with Atkins is this:
Expect to lose between 5% to 15% of what you need to lose in the first few weeks (depends on your metabolism, age, and amount you need to lose–those with 100+ will lose more than those with 30 pounds to lose). From then on, when you move on to OWL, and start adding carbs back into your diet, your weight loss will slow down to 1-2 pounds a week, depending on your level of activity.
I’m also on Atkins, and I do weigh myself every morning after urinating, and there were days when I wasn’t losing weight, but I could tell I was losing inches (I never measured myself), because of the way my clothes fit.
I crossed the 50-lb mark this morning! Hooray! I’d been telling people 49 pounds for the last weekish, but 50 sounds so much more impressive. It also means I have only 121 pounds to go.
411/361/240
I hope it’s ok to come in just to celebrate a little–I didn’t lose much (just 3 pounds), BUT I went down a digit, from the 240s to the 230s. OOOooooo that feels like such a big deal. Kinda like Bambi going from 49 to 50 pounds lost. It feels like soooo much more. Good job!
2001: 340/270 and maintained
2004: 268/239/200
2005: 200/150
Lel(those are els, right?), I’ll be very happy to celebrate with you in 2006–that’s about when I reasonably expect to finish up losing and stabilizing. So, hang in there with me, will ya?
Internet Legend, thanks for the recipe/method. And congrats on maintaining. I’ve found maintaining/stabilizing needs just as much encouragement and attention as losing does–but sometimes people forget. So, congrats on maintaining and keep up the good work!!!
Wicked Blue, I sure sympathize with being too embarrassed to tell people what you weigh. Hugs.
Still 204 here, up 2 from when we started but steady for the last week. I haven’t done anything other than try to eat healthier and a little work in the yard.
I joined Weight Watchers online on 3/28. Last week I lost 3 pounds. My weigh-in is on Sunday, so we’ll see how I’m doing. I already feel better because I’ve been eating much better food. Lots of grilled chicken and veggies! My starting weight was 242 and I’m trying to get down to 135-ish. I’d have plenty of muscle right now (I do too! You just can’t always see it under the flab.) and I want to keep the muscle, so I may end up adjusting my target weight as I get close to it and see how I feel and look. I’m sure it’ll take at least a year. WW isn’t the fastest way to lose pounds, but I think it’s a healthy, manageable way to change my lifestyle and learn to keep the weight off.
So count me in! I’m new to the SDMB Weight Loss Club this round. Good luck to everyone!
I reached my first milestone today: twenty pounds gone! I’m so happy, and I made an appointment to get my hair done as a reward for myself. And not even at Supercuts this time!
I finally upped my cardio to thirty minutes a day, and I’ve also rearranged my meals so that my calories are more spread out through the day. I’m thinking about doing Atkins, too, as it seems to be working for so many of you.
Congratulations, Susie! 20 sounds so much more impressive than 19, doesn’t it?
If you’re thinking about it, I know that I’d be happy to answer any questions you might have. Some of us are taking quite a drubbing in another thread around here, so it’s nice to have a positive view of Atkins in this thread.
BTW, weighed myself this morning – down 3 pounds since 4/8. 118 lb to go, which sounds like a lot, but I started with 170 to lose.
I’ve lost 5 pounds as of April 11th. Yay! It seems like a tiny number, but I picked up a 5 pound sack of flour at the store the other day and it made me happy to feel that.
My medicines I’m on have upped my appetite like 1000%, and I’ve been eating nothing but crap since the weekend. I’m holding steady at 180 though, which I can be happy with for now. At least I’m eating again…
I’m also well into a size 12 jeans. Whoo! (Even more of a whoo because my sister just lost a lot of weight as well, and went from a size 12 to a 6/8. Hand-me-downs rock!)

I have lupus, which includes a sypmptom of a horrible rash outbreak caused by the sun or tanning. I’m going to be able to fit into my 2 piece by June, and I still can’t go to the beach without my face exploding. [\quote]
Pammipoo, there’s increasing evidence that lupus can be brought permanently into remission with a plant-based diet. Here’s a link to John McDougall M.D.'s website:
