I cheated, but it’s OK! I started a thread about it here.
96.1 kilograms this morning!
That’s 211 lbs, or some 22 pounds less than when I started. Pretty damn good, if I do say so myself.
Congrats Coldfire (and all you other losers who haven’t checked in lately). Looks like this thread will be good for two reasons - keeping us motivated and learning that pesky metric system that y’all want us stubborn Americans to learn.
As for me, 6 weeks in and I’m down 10 pounds (and that’s doin’ it the old fashioned way - none of this new-fangled Atkins stuff for me). I also got the bodyfat analyzer and figured out that stuff too.
Well, it took 25 years to put it all on, so I figure 2.5 years to take it off isn’t too bad. That means I’ll be celebrating raeching my goal on New Year’s Eve 2006. It also means a goal of about 34 pounds every six months, or about 1.3 pounds per week. That, to me, is a doable goal.

I’m back. My method this time is to ease into it - I’m not going to try Weight Watchers again. I’m going to exercise when I can, and eat healthily when I can.
We’ll see how it goes. I’m moving out in a couple of weeks, so that will either help a lot or hurt a lot.
Hey you all. I stopped posting to this thread a couple of versions back. I was trying Atkins, which was really, really bad for me. I’m just getting my routine back under control after the better part of a year of pretty unsuccessfully undoing the Atkins problems, including having regained much of the weight I’d lost by that point.
12/02: 212
8/30/04: 199
9/6/04: 193.5
Whee! So how’s by all of you?
I was 94.4 kilograms this morning, so 11.3 down from my starting weight.
In lbs: 208 pounds, which means I’ve lost almost 25 pounds.
I’ve now lost 1/3 of the total weight I’m trying to lose.
242/206/137
I can fit into clothes I wore in 1995 and *almost * can get into my uniform skirt from high school. My 10 year reunion is in a couple of weeks, so I’m pleased with that.
Mid-month check in–

I’ve been using the President’s Challenge as a motivator (presidentschallenge.org) (and not only because I never managed the chin-up required of girls to get my President’s Council on Physical Fitness patch).
I’ve also been logging in daily exercise on another board.
How you doing?
If I must.
250/172/140-ish
I’m still on Atkins, but I’ve been watching the fat and calories, too, because the weight loss has slowed considerably. I’ve also added more bread back in (because I just love it so much), but now that I’m back to work, I’ll do better.
I have a couple of kids in my class this year whose siblings I had two and three years ago, and their parents have commented on how great I look and how much weight I’ve lost. On one hand, it’s nice to hear that, but on the other hand, a couple of them have raved so much, it makes me stop and think, “Geez, was I really that fat?”
(Answer: Yes, you were a big fat fucking cow, my dear.)
**BiblioCat, **what kind of bread do you eat? I’ve been pretty successful at switching over to Ezekiel (whole sprouted grains) which, if blood sugar readings are any indication, is much more slowly converted to glucose.
Congratulations on the compliments. I got a lot of “you look different” this week at school.
I think the last time I posted in this thread I was 218, well I am around 202 now so im really starting to get there and it feels good
I finally got started in August – what a waste of a summer. On the plus side, it looks like I didn’t gain any weight this summer. Time to catch back up here.
So now I’m eating less carbs and forever trying to get back into exercise. I know I’d never stick with spending hours a day in the gym, so I’m just trying to get into going on a treadmill or cross trainer 30 minutes a day – IMO, something is better than nothing.
I still expect fully that I may not hit my goal weight until 2006, but I’d like to get under 200 early next year. (I’ll be hanging in there, as_u_wish, and yes, the letter is l. )
vunderbob, my doctor currently has me on glucophage for insulin resistance (not yet diabetes, but given my family history, it’s more a matter of delaying it than preventing it anyway), but in my case, it’s working miracles – I could eat a large animal and lose weight when I’m on it. Then again, Atkins concerns me a bit long-term – given my food preferences, I think it would drive me crazy. Staying under 80 carbs or so per day is probably much more tolerable for me.
I’m glad I’m not the only person here trying to lose quite a bit of weight. It’s so strange saying that, well, I want to lose 130-135 pounds. That’s an average woman – ack!
So, currently: 258/247/125, and today just isn’t the day for measuring progress!
Hi **lel, **I’m also insulin resistant but so far have been able to stay under the wire and not have to take Metformin. I find that 30 minutes at 3 mph on the treadmill before breakfast does wonders for my A1c as well as for my weight. Without that half hour before breakfast, the weight comes right back on at about 10 lbs. a month.
I know that I’ve mentioned this before several times, but it has been so helpful to me and my doctor just doubled my daily dosage from 50 mg to 100 mg.
When I began to regain some of my weight after gastric bypass surgery, my psychiatrist put me on a medication called topamax. It was originally developed for seizures, but had the side effect of helping to control compulsive behaviors including compulsive eating.
I thought that I had stopped gaining weight, but when I got on the scales after a couple of months, I had actually lost ten pounds. A couple of weeks later, I had lost three more.
This week when I mentioned to my shrink that the topamax seemed to be working, he decided to double my dose and now has me taking it at night instead of in the morning. He said that it also helps to stablize mood swings (which I have some problems with). When I commented that this is a “miracle drug,” he said that it has been helpful to diabetics. (I assume that this is because of weight loss.)
I don’t shop as much or smoke as much either.
Most importantly, I am not preoccupied with food.
This might be something that you might want to research and discuss with your doctor and ask her or him to consider.
I too lost an entire person. “He” weighs 135 pounds and I call him “Chuck.” Most of him has been gone for the better part of six years now. My life is totally different without him.
There were old friends who recognized me only by the sound of my voice. Others screamed when they saw me. Some just stared open-mouthed. One woman who had taught next door to me refused to believe that I was who I said I was, but she was a little crazy anyway.
Keep the faith!
Apparently, I’m fairly highly insulin resistant, and I think the doctor is going for weight loss in my case. Maybe someday I’ll be off Metformin, but for now, she’s putting me on it. I can try exercise to ward off the pounds, and I know it’s good to start early, but my success rate would be about zero starting at 6 am or whatever. I could do moderate exercise at that rate after work, though.
How was your weight loss experience, Zoe? How difficult was it? How was it afterwards, and maintaining the loss?
I don’t know if an Inspirational Story™ is appropriate here or not, but in January of 2003, I weighed 215 lbs. and was getting winded climbing stairs. I started a diet and exercise program in the middle of that month.
Two weeks ago, I weighed about 147 lbs. More significantly, I taught my first step aerobics class that day. Two years ago, I wouldn’t have believed you if you told me this would happen.

I haven’t been home to see my ultra slim mother for a couple of years. I told her I would go home for Christmas, and I started worrying about how much weight I’ve gained. She loves me, but she’s a genetically skinny person and she just doesn’t understand why people gain weight. (she is one of those honest to god can eat anything anytime, I can’t believe I had a 50% chance at those genes).
I started losing weight in late July. I’m following a program I made up myself, based on SuperFoods Rx : Fourteen Foods That Will Change Your Life by Steven G. Pratt. The goal is to eat really healthy food every day and avoid bad stuff. I’m keeping a food diary and keeping a daily record of: calories (goal of 1400), fat (goal of 30), carbs (goal of 100) and daily super foods eaten (goal of 10).
The weight is coming off pretty steadily, although I’ve slowed down the last 3 weeks (only 1 lb per week). Now, that I’ve lost about 20 pounds and I’m starting to see it, I have to start exercising. That’s the next phase of the plan!
I’m really worried about next week, I’m traveling to Boston for a week on business. I’m pretty good at staying motivated while at home, with my usual routine, but I have a tendency to eat like a cazy person while traveling. This will be a real test.
Interesting.
I’m taking Topamax, too, (200 mgs a day) but for migraines. I was taking it for about a year before I started on Atkins, but I hadn’t lost any weight with it, probably because I wasn’t really a compulsive eater, but was just eating the wrong stuff and was basically eating very badly. I was drinking lots of sodas and eating way too many carbs and sugary crap. Once I completely changed the way I eat, and got all the sugar and junk out of my diet, the weight started to come off.
It’s weird how a drug is developed for one thing, but have side effects that work for other things. My migraines have nearly disappeared. I couldn’t live without it.
I just had to post - jumped on the scale this morning, 169. I haven’t seen the other side of 170 since around 2001. I survived my business trip to Boston, ate well the entire time and did tons of walking. I’m over halfway to my goal and very motivated to keep going!
I’m ready to start exercising but I pulled a muscle in my left hip lugging a bunch of heavy bags around the Boston airport. I’m trying to let the muscle rest before starting my workout tapes next week.

Good for you Glory! I have to travel sometimes myself. I have lost 85 pounds since the beginning of April, from 375# to 290#. Am actually doing something similar to what you are doing. Works very well for me too!
