SDMB Weight Loss Thread: August Edition

[QUOTE=Zjestika]
I’ve been hearing about the Couch 2 5k program. I think I’ll have to try it. And may I say, holy crap, running for 1 hour 15 minutes, that is so long! Great job, you should be very proud of yourself! Speed doesn’t matter nearly as much as endurance, IMO.

I did some martial arts in high school, and loved it, but wasn’t so serious about it because, you know, boys and beer and stuff were way more fun. I’m excited about getting back to it. I was practicing jump kicks last night and it was exhilarating. Then I did some yoga and did some inverted poses that I would have had a real hard time doing a few months ago. I am just feeling so awesome.

Oh, and I’m seriously considering signing up for a belly dancing class. There’s an 8 week class that’s only $40. I’m really trying to think of things that I can do in the winter once there’s snow all around. My place is too small for equipment, and it’s really too cold from mid December through late February to even consider my regular walking. And a membership at the Y- can you believe $60 a month? Gah!

I friended you, Olives!

You sound like (with the yoga and belly dancing) you may have a lot in common with my Auntie. She is Bubblebabs on SparkPeople – I converted her – check her out. She is only 13 years older than me. Alas, we look the same age.

Thanks for the compliment w/r/t endurance. Oy, I missed 2 weeks of running, I was a fool for thinking I could just jump back in. I burned out after 2 miles today. I got a good workout though. My goal right now is just staying consistent, running 4 days a week. Distance is not as important as just getting the days in. Sometimes you just have to adjust your expectations… a little frustrating, but at least I’m trying.

I’ve slowly cranked down to under 92kg, but the body shrinkage continues.

I’ve become a bit of a running fan myself. I have a month to go before participating in a 10k charity run (for Cancer Research UK). The distance is fine, I’d like to get in under 50 minutes. I run 3 times a week (4-6 miles) with people from work (lunchtime runners) - a couple of guys are pretty quick, so I push myself with them for about 3 miles now, then tend to drop off a bit for the finish.

I am going to gym for a workout review tonight. I think I will change from a basic cardio/weights machine program to one that emphasises functional fitness (thinking more like Crossfit) using some core stability as well. Hopefully this will help shift some stubborn remaining fat (subcutaneous fat on my back, belly and chest) and I will feel really good if I get down to 85kg (still technically overweight, but hey).

After the run, I want to get back on a bike - I’ve got a reasonable MTB that I want to upgrade with suspension forks, suspension seat post and disk brakes for trail riding. Good prep for an eventual short course triathlon next spring.
