S'dope Moderators: you weak-assed/frivolously minded/wanne be intellectual pussies

Well, now I AM enraged, BrightSmite.

If you’re going to Pit a Moderator, at least have the courtesy to name the Moderator. How I am I supposed to keep my standings in the Pit Bowl if you Pit me without naming me?

If you ever do this again, I shall stamp my foot and glare ferociously.

I agree, though I’m not sure about the placement of that thread in GD. And what’s with tomndebb’s smarmy “We can all rest easier” bit? Once I heard about the case I was interested as to how it turned out. As a robot historian, I’m surprised tom didn’t feel the same way.

Yeah it’s been getting really bad lately, despite our continued hemmoraging of old threads. I’d say I get a “not responding” message almost a third of the time. I guess that new server is still a dream on the horizon and we are still “butting against the limits” of our current setup. It’ll all have to be sorted out before we get the animated smilies, that’s for sure.

Please. At least say “neyt” to him, and demand of him a … shrubbery.

Funny, I always assumed he was human.

Why?

Given that their light is a mere reflection of that of the Perfect Master, I would characterize is as fluorescence rather than incandescence.

Mods, is it allright to bring closure to an old thread in the way the OP did?

Even though it is a zombie, anyone searching and finding it would be better informed with the thread as it now is rather than as it was left.

I think the Mod locking of the thread is fine, since BrightSmite can still open a new thread linking to the old one and discussing the new implications.

It’s something of a judgement call, I think. In a case like this, where the specific case being updated never really got much interest in the first place, you have to ask yourself who you’re providing closure for. There have certainly been cases where months-old threads were updated and left open, but most of the time it’s usually best to just start a new one and link to the old one.

It should also be noted that unless you make a hobby out of resurrecting old threads, the worst that’s going to happen is it’ll get locked. We don’t usually warn people for bumping old threads unless we think they’re doing it to be a jerk, which was not the case here. Don’t take thread closings personally, unless we call you names while we do it in which case you should take it personally.

Because I forthrightly defend our palladins of purity? Why do you hate Cecil?

Isn’t there an “auto-lock” function that can be used and set for x number of days or months to keep this from happening?

“All Hail Anewbies!”

The only facet about the whole thing I find surprising, is that BrightSmite didn’t get a warning for a copyright infringement. I mean, the guy posted the entire article in his link. Something that is expressly forbidden in the user agreement:

As Giraffe said, part of the reason I closed it was that the original story got no traction, with half the responses being tangential hijacks. If there is some huge clamor to re-open the thread, I might consider it, although I suspect that a new thread with a carefully constructed topic for debate with a link to the original would actually work better for a person who wished to discuss that topic. Anyone tripping into the original thread, at this point, is going to be waylaid by all the side chatter regarding Mr. Perdue.

That’d preclude long term discussions such as Same Stone’s excellent Bush Space Initiative thread. Sometimes events don’t move fast enough to keep something on the first page a forum for months at a time. Locking off all old threads would fragment the heck out of these sorts of discussions. Sure, the way things work now, we’ve got to rely on the Mods to make judgement calls, but that’s what they got the Jackboots and coffeecups for.

And they don’t usually issue warnings about zombie threads being resurrected, they just close the thread. They may issue warnings because your action was jerkish, but that’s not for resurrecting a zombie thread as such. More likely the particualr thread in question or the post you made.

Just got back from Tybee Island. Rented a house for the week for the wife’s 50th b’day (…she married a young boy toy, BTW). Great little town, though I found most of the natives to be a bit odd.

hmmm, I think this may be the first time I’ve posted in the Pit. I suppose I’m expected to get my dander up about a perceived injustice of some sort…
…got one…

…People in front of me who take a long time to turn left on a green traffic arrow, causing me to miss the light, are weenies.

You forgot to curse, Dr. Shitshorts.

How much later did she then marry you?

Now, now, Tom – he only looks that decrepit.

You, sir, are also a weenie.
…dad burn it.

As soon as I got my Medicare card. Good hearted to a fault, the wife is still very kind to her ex (Pepe, the pool cleaner) who is apparently in dire straights for work. She employs him to service our pool on a regular basis while I’m at work. I keep telling her that the pool never seems to look very clean, but she’s too good-natured to fire him. My wife—she’s a keeper!

…and those are the type of threads that could be “opted-in” for a longer amount of time (or even not subject to auto-lock) at the moderator’s discreation, or by request of the OP, if it is a truly excellent thread such as the BSI thread. It could make the mod’s job easier to respond to requests to opt-in the great (not just good) threads and let the auto-lock do its job for them on the zombie threads.
