SE Michiganders (and others): What are YOU doing this weekend??

Because maybe I want to do it, too!

My long-distance boyfriend is coming to visit me this weekend (YAY!!) and I’m trying to find something interesting for us to do. Unfortunately, my creativity is failing me big time. Anybody got any ideas beyond a movie at the AMC and dinner at Olive Garden?

Some things that might matter: I’m 24 (he’s 23) and I live an hour north of Detroit ('round Romeo). Something nearby is good, but I don’t mind driving to something if it’s worth it. I’m not very outdoorsey, so nothing too tough, please!

I addressed this to people who live around me because I was hoping for some specific answers. In otherwords, instead of saying, “Hey, go out to eat at a resturant,” saying something more like, “Hey, go out to eat at THIS resturant, it really rocks! And there’s a cool coffeeshop called THIS nearby!”

But, If anyone else has a response, I’m more than willing to listen!

Thanks!!!

YAY for long distance relationships! I did two and enjoyed the excitment of it all.

I am in Oxford/Ortonville.

If it is crappy this weekend, you could take him to Great Lakes Crossing for some Vaccuuous shopping, wandering around, a cheap meal and a movie at the bajillion screened Star Theater.

If it is not so crappy, the Zoo is always nice. Closes at 4pm on Friday and Saturday, I beleive. Then you can go to downtown Royal Oak for eats and wandering. Loads of interesting shops there. Great restaurants too.

If you feel brave, you could go to Greek Town for the casinos.

Downtown Rochester has some lovely shopping and eateries.

We’re going to the DIA this weekend. There’s some sort of glass exhibit, my wife got tickets, and it’s good for us. Sigh.

. . . actually, I expect I’ll enjoy it. And from the DIA, it’s just a short jog down to the Hard Rock Cafe! With a Borders right across the atrium!

As a former resident of SE Michigan who hates casinos, I just wanted to point out that there are also some delicious restaurants in Greektown. Or you can just go there for the desserts.
I’ll second the DIA. While Detroit is not exactly a cultural haven, it’s not a complete wasteland either. They have a decent modern art exhibit, and if your SO hasn’t seen the Diego Riviera mural, that’s always worth a look.
If you wanted to drive a bit and go to Ann Arbor, I could be of much more help. Plus there’s always cool things going on there.

it isn’t??? At least it’s on it’s way to re-becoming the Murder Captial of the U.S. :stuck_out_tongue:
Anyway, isn’t there a motorcycle show going on there this weekend?

Otherwise, I’d suggest Windsor or more inland. Lansing is lame for the ‘club’ scene, but there are some really nice resturants and such. But if it’s a standard “dinner and a movie date” I don’t know that you really need to travel far for that… Novi would probably be sufficient.

Of course, you always check out this site - Great Stuff to do in S.E. Michigan.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions! I’ll run them by the S.O.

The DIA sounds like a good idea, plus, I haven’t been to the Hard Rock Cafe, yet! And Great Lakes Crossing is a good crappy weather wandering idea.

And thanks for the site, Genghas Bob. I’ll have to poke around that one more

Ghengis beat me to it. That’s a good site for what’s going on.

If you want to come to Ann Arbor, there is always a nice assortment of stuff to do here. Pretty decent restaurants. I think Emo Phillips is appearing at the comedy place here. U-M’s hockey team is playing the Team USA under 18 team (which happens to be based in Ann Arbor) Saturday night.

If it’s not crappy out, Brighton can be a nice destination for a day/evening. Walk about and window shop, the gazebo and trails and playground right on the river, feed the ducks, coupla nice restaurants, it can be fun. I like picking a suburban city and just spending time discovering it, just far enough away to feel like you’re going somewhere, but not an actual road trip.
