What about Seal Teams 1,2,3,4,5,7,8,9,10? What’s the matter, are they chopped liver or something? Hows come they don’t get a share of the glory?
DEVGRU specializes in counterterror and business is booming. The other teams are more likely to be deployed somewhere and work for a while, while DEVGRU is more likely to respond to a hostage incident or a raid on Osama or something like that which will make the papers.
There is actually only one “SEAL Team”. It was called SEAL Team 6 during the Cold War to confuse the Russians into believing there were at least 5 more such groups they hadn’t heard a peep about.
What about MI’s 1-4?
That’s not right but there’s some truth to it. Team 1 and 2 were formed in 1962. Team 2 was actually the first team. They were formed the same day as Team 1 but they were on the east coast and Team 1 was on the west coast, so they officially existed first. When Team 6 was formed, they did take the name to confuse the Soviets into thinking there were more teams than actually existed at the time. Now there are teams 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, and 10. Team 6 was renamed to DEVGRU. I don’t know what happened to 9, maybe it was skipped to avoid confusion with 6.
On the assumption that this isn’t a whoosh: Directorate of Military Intelligence - Wikipedia
From what I’ve read in some of the recent books by SEALs I gather that people go from training into the other teams but Team 6 is composed only of those with several years experience in other teams; kind of the elite of the elite.
