His last acting role was a voice performance in 2012. I remember saying that his appearance in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen in 2003 felt like a Farewell Role for the action star, and was disparaged on this Board for saying so, but he’s only done voice work since then, and none in the past eight years. Still, you wouldn’t really expect him to do more.
Apparently he turned down both Morpheus in the Matrix and Gandalf in Lord of the Rings* because he didn’t understand them. He decided he would take the next major movie they offered him, which ended up being League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
It was a major disappointment and he regretted taking it.
*I feel like he was in the mix, but not definitely offered these. I’d be surprised if they would have really put him in those roles, but that is what he claims…
I won’t repeat Auric Goldfinger’s retort – I think Connery’s got a few years in him yet.
Maybe, but I think the role was a good sendoff – Connery abdicating the Action Hero role in his 70s to the next generation, as his Allen Quatermain handed off his in the movie.
