Well, Cartoon Network has announced Season 2 of Big O, something I am definitely looking forward to. I think its a great show, and the first season left off on a huge cliffhanger. The battle between Big O and Big Duo was particularly impressive. I’m really curious to see how people’s memories/retrieving them are tied to the Megadeuses…
Schwartzvald: “There’s only enough room in this city for one Megadeus- one of these bigs has got to go!”
I just hope they haven’t built up the audiences’ expectations too high. Not only did the first series end on a big cliffhanger, but there’s been a long (over a year and a half at least, right?) wait for the next set. The show kind of had the feeling that it was all style and didn’t really have a set direction in mind. I hope I’m wrong…
And I totally agree. I watched maybe five episodes of the original series of Big O and while I thought the setting was great and the characters pretty swell, the giant robot bugged me.
I just don’t care for big mecha that aren’t formed by merging robot lions or capable of changing into a semi-truck. I don’t know why, it isn’t a realism issue or anything silly like that; mecha just seem to take up space in an otherwise good show that could be used for the more interesting bits.
I’ve been watching the first season and I’m just intrigued by how useful a 30 meter killer battle droid is turning out to be. Really, you’d think it would just be gathering dust in those subway tunnels, but every episode, like clockwork, some enormous, ancient evil arises that has to be slapped down. Personally, I can’t think of more than once or twice in my life when I would have needed a 30 meter tall robot and most of them involved getting cats down from trees.
Yeah, the music is very good. Some catchy jazz tunes, as well as the creepy ‘twilight zone’ type music. Really sets the mood.
Something I always found funny was the fact that Big O has a frikkin LASER system built into his head (his eyes can shoot laser beams, and his whole forehead can shoot one huge beam) and yet Mr. Negotiator prefers to smack down enemies with the piston punch (cool nonetheless)
The new season starts Aug 3rd in the lead off position. So 9pm for me, later for all of you guys. It’s going to be a once a week thing.
Is this the world premiere? I’ve heard some people say we were getting it before Japan and some people say differently. I know they’ve been calling “Cyborg 009” on Toonami World Premieres. That’d be pretty cool if it was.
The only things I don’t like about the show, are the mecha fight scenes (yeah, yeah, giant robots slugging it out, big deal), the bits of twilight zone music rip offs, and the Batman like aspects (I prefer originality).
That being said, I otherwise love the show. The way everybody interacts with each other, the film noir style, that piano piece that they play in almost every episode, the story lines, and the characters (except for Angel).
Anyway, I’ve always wanted a conclusion, and I’m glad that I’m finally getting one. I just hope it lives up to my expectations.
