It is certainly a British tradition, Dickens wrote several Christmas ghost stories. The BBC also have got in on the act - A Ghost Story For Christmas.
It does also seem to be something of an American tradition too - Ghost Stories of Christmas and Haunted Christmas: Ghost Stories.
