seaweed salad.

When given seaweed salad along with a sushi order or bento box it is delish. I bought a frozen package in the seafood section of the grocery and YUCK it tasted like fish smells. My question is should I have added to the salad? I question this as I got seaweed salad at a restaurant yesterday and it wasnt as good as sushi place either. Do they make up the salad with the oils etc ?

Seaweed only tastes 'good" (and that’s relative) when really fresh.

If the OP is talking about what I think he/she is talking about… you’re wrong, THAT seaweed salad is really good.

But yeah, seaweed can be a bit touchy and that’s probably why the sushi place does it best - they’ve the most history/technique for doing it.

Assuming you’re talking about ocean salad https://www.google.com/search?q=ocean+salad&rlz=1C1MSIM_enUS785US785&oq=ocean+salad&aqs=chrome…69i57.5142j0j4&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8, the main ingredient is wakame, which is usually sold dry and rehydrated before use.

Seaweed of all types is highly perishable, lasting only a day or two once harvested and unless it’s specified as fresh, it’s likely dried. I’ve never seen it frozen.

If you’re buying dried wakame, be sure to read the package or ask because there’s there’s different types, some are tougher and stringier and not cut into the 1/8" strips usually used for ocean salad. There’s Check out this Amazon page to get an idea of the different types: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=wakame&ref=nb_sb_noss_1

Don’t confuse wakame with konbu, which is thicker, tougher and must be cooked (not just rehydrated) to be edible. Like wakame, there’s different types of konbu. Also, there’s two main types of konbu. Dashi konbu is only for use in making stock. It’s too tough to eat even even thoroughly cooked. Nishime konbu is what you want if you want to eat.

Taste is relative & subjective right?

Now, I like seaweed salad, but only at sushi places.

it was the seaweed that is thin and stringy … I bought it frozen and it said contained sesame oil but eeeeewww it wasnt enough to cover the taste or smell.
thanks everyone for the input. Wont waste my money again.
Now I know there are loads of others out there too.

I also love wakame salad.

The only packaged version I’ve found that I like is this one that Costco sells. It’s not as good as at a local sushi place, but it costs like 1/6th as much. You do have to be interested in eating 6-8 servings of it over a few days.
