Secret ban--Carl Hiaasen unavailable

moderator feel free to move) In 2020 a Florida author, Carl Hiassen wrote a novel about wildlife ranger, “Squeeze Me” that included wicked satire about Trump. Recently, I was looking another one of his books and discovered all but one of his books is unavailable at either St Louis or St Louis County library. Apparently, some of his MAGA followings actually read books, and somehow got his books banned without any notice. Have any other dopers noticed this happening?

They may not be banned -just checked out and never brought back.

It’s available on Amazon. Not that I encourage anyone to purchase it from there, just that it’s not been banned. Jeez, I remember when CH was a hero in Floriduh.

It’s available at my north Florida library.

I’m talking about several hundred library branches

Go to the source - the Missouri State Librarian - and ask. AFAICT from a cursory Google search, her name is Robin Westphal and she can be reached at the Wolfner Library as cut-n-paste below. However, I’m not 100% sure that’s accurate as I don’t understand how she is both the Missouri State Librarian and some kind of executive at Wolfner Memorial Library. But I bet if you call them, they can point you in the right direction.

thanks–I’m in Bright Red state outside of the cities

Per St. Louis public library catalog:

Squeeze Me: 22 copies available, 5 copies checked out
Bad Monkey: 4 copies available, 4 copies on order, 6 copies checked out
Hoot: 1 copy in transit, 2 copies checked out

Also checked the county public library catalog,

Squeeze Me: 29 copies
Hoot: 5 copies checked out

etc. These are physical book holdings, not including audiobooks or ebooks.

Are you spelling it correctly when you search? WorldCat says there’s at least one copy at Saint Louis Public Library near St. Louis, Missouri: Squeeze me | WorldCat.org

Good point, his name is spelled “Hiaasen” with two 'a’s.

Hey. I have Bad Monkey. Bought it at the thrift store because I love the cover.
(Yeah, I’m that person)

Haven’t read it.
Is it good?

His books are always good. Seriously weird, a bit disturbing, but good.

to all–while your research may be valid, when I tried to check ANY books by Hiaassen (thanks for correction) today, both systems said there was nothing to loan, not a wait list. I find it quite a coincidence that I read several of his books last year, and now none after election

Which is strange, because Max’s link shows copies available. What happens if you use his link?

It’s 2 a’s and one s. Hiaasen. (Although at Max’s link, the Book World review has it spelled wrong)

I’m talking about inside the library system as of today

thanks for info, i’ll check it out

@Max_S 's links appear, to this non-St. Louis resident, as being to the St. Louis library system’s website. Are they not?

he’s quirky, somewhat like Tim Dorsey

I meant banned from STL library
