This evening there was a message on our answering machine saying that my wife won a contest she had entered, and we can get a free home security system, worth $1100, with free installation. I’d be a lot more excited about this, except that three weeks ago someone came to my door saying that if we agreed to put a sign on our lawn we would get a free security system.
Now I’m not all that interested. I live in a safe part of one of the safest cities in the US. I am also not eager to have to remember to turn it off to let the dog out at 3 am. However, I’m curious about what the catch is. My guess is high monthly maintenance fees (I haven’t had a chance to call.) Anyone have any experience with this?
My dim-bulb ex fell for one of those lawn sign guys a few years back. I came home from work and they were drilling holes in my walls to install it.
The “catch” was a minimum of one year service, at 35$ a month. I almost never used the damn thing, and did a little dance when the year was finally up. In celebration, I tore the console off my wall while laughing maniacally.
Q.Hi. I’m selling cheap empty boxes with “Security System” written on.
A. Oh, wonderful! I was just about to go on holiday and I don’t have any security. For instance, the computer in the bedroom is probably worth $2000, and don’t start my about the wife’s jewelry.
Q. You’ll be fine. Only you and I have keys, so unless I accidently leave them where my brother-in-law with the striped jersey and big white van can “borrow” them it’ll be fine. And if that does happen, I’ll give you your $5 back.
OK, I don’t think that’s what’s happening, but it was my first thought.
Don’t think it is that sort of a scam. Interesting to know that someone else ran into the sign deal.
$35 a month seems hardly enough to pay for the system and the installation. We have lots of doors - one front door, 1 to the garage, and three to the patio. Maybe they are getting desperate because the crime rate is so low.
