I went to an auction this morning and among the household goods and used car, they had three horses being auctioned. I’ve been looking for a companion for my TB gelding Irish, and I bought a miniature horse for only $125. Here’s a picture of Peanut. I have him in a paddock adjacent to Irish’s main paddock. His feet are in horrible shape - these folks threw tons of money away to pretty up the barn, but all three horses looked as though they haven’t seen a farrier in a couple years. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s foundered. But he moves well and seems to be healthy enough. And since he’s Irish’s pet, not much will be required of him except to be a mannerly gentleman on the ground.
I can’t imagine letting an animal of mine go at an auction, where anyone could have them. Here’s hoping he has a long and happy life with me.
The reason I asked is because a friend of mine rescued a minature pony recently. The owner was in jail and his wife was physically unable to care for the pony - and 15 dogs. The pony thought he was a dog and was great with people but was very aggressive to the minature donkey and the full-sized horse; to the point of vet bills.
laminitis |?lam??n?tis| noun inflammation of sensitive layers of tissue (laminae) inside the hoof in horses and other animals. It is particularly prevalent in ponies feeding on rich spring grass and can cause extreme lameness.
From my desktop dictionary. In extreme cases, the animal must be put down.
What a sweetie! Have you introduced him to your other horse yet? You have to describe what they make of each other! I love watching animals interact, it’s often hilarious.
SnakesCatLady - He was in with large horses before, and Irish has been with ponies before, so there shouldn’t be a problem. I’m intrdoucing them through adjoining paddocks for the first few days so they can get to know each other before they’re in together.
Zagloba - His back is waist-high on very short me. I’d say he’s about 36" at the withers. My TB is 16.2 hh, which makes him 5’ 2" at the withers.
Hello Again - I don’t know where they got the name. When I asked the man that owned him, he had to really think before he could come up with a name. I think he was just an ignored lawn ornament, along with a QH gelding and a almost 3 year old spotted saddle horse filly.
Monica - I don’t know how old he is. In his teens, I would imagine. unfortunately, I’ve never been good at aging horses by their teeth, and the previous owner didn’t know.
Malitharn - When I brought him in, Irish first stood still and very tall, like he sensed a threat. Then he realized it was another horse and he was so excited! I went down to check on the new guy last night at 10:00, and Irish was still standing at the gate that separates them.
He’s beautiful! I would love to see pictures of Irish too! Didn’t you also get a dog recently, or am I thinking of someone else?
I’m a sucker for animal pictures, just love to see them!
I put Irish in his paddock for some supervised play. Mostly he just wants to stand near Peanut and guard him. He’s definitely got the “herd sentry” thing going on.
I don’t know what I was thinking before. I’m 15.2 hands tall. Irish is 5’ 6" tall.
Caridwen - I have some pictures of the two together, but I can’t get them to load from my camera. Here are a couple pictures of Irish - Pic 1 and Pic 2.
Here is a picture of my English Setter and my standard poodle. I don’t have any pics of my four cats, so I never write about them - I think that’s illegal. I also have a doberman and an Alaskan malamute.
Do the regular-size horses treat them like other horses–I mean, do they totally register that this is another horse? I don’t know much about how horses interact but I do know they like to stand so their tails can brush flies off each other, which won’t happen with the little cutie.
