Seeking Good Hour Long Podcasts

I go for walks in the mornings for about an hour and I love listening to entertaining and educational podcasts. I get the new This American Life podcast every week, but I walk between three and five mornings a week.

I’m currently working through the episodes of Radiolab and I like them a lot, but I don’t know what to listen to when I finish. There’s another NPR show, The Story, that I suppose I could download, but I find it a lot less engaging. I’d like something with a scientific theme, but I’m really interested just to listen to something good that keeps me immersed so my workout seems to go faster.

Any ideas?

Do you like the Blues? My favorite podcast is the Roadhouse. Averages out to an hour each week. Available free through iTunes, among other venues.

I love Science Friday.

Car Talk is always amusing

They’re not quite an hour long, but I’m a big fan of Dan Savage’s Savage Love.

When I loaded the podcast I could load lots of the previous shows. All a very good listen.

But don’t they cut up the segments?

I like Point of Inquiry , the podcast of the Center for Inquiry. Boy are they long winded.

I would second “Car Talk” but I had a couple of episodes on my ipod during our trip to Colorado this month, and I suddenly realized everyone in the van was staring at me while I was snickering uncontrollably. How strange do you want to look strolling down the road?

I listen to This American Life on podcast every week. (I don’t listen to as much NPR now that I don’t drive as much.) It’s excellent.

I also listen to an old favorite from my former locale, The Media Project. An analysis of the week’s national and local media coverage by WAMC’s incredibly and comically self-important CEO/poli sci professor, plus other area media figures (a newspaper publisher, a newspaper editor, TV news anchors, etc.). Sharp and fun—but only 30 minutes, I’m afraid.

My sister and her husband are fascinated by Game Theory, which is all about the BUSINESS of video games. I haven’t had a chance to hear it yet.

A good one (when I know who the hell the author is) is the Bat Segundo Show. He does incredibly in-depth interviews with authors and cartoonists, etc.
