Today my neighbor came over to tell me that her daughter’s car was the scene of yet another attempted burglary. This sort of thing has happened a few times where I live, and I’m thinking of buying and installing a surveillance camera of some sort. I can, without any difficulty, place such a camera high up on a wall and obtain good lines of sight. This will also prevent would be thieves from destroying the camera before carrying out whatever caper they have in mind. The area is rather well lit at night, so hopefully good shots will be possibe even if the deed is done at three am.
Does anybody know about the type of cameras available?
What will I need in terms of software/hardware to support this?
A buddy of mine got some once and hooked them up to his computer. He was even able to access the views of his driveway from the internet. He had a password protected site to do that. The cameras he had were tiny, about three quarters of an inch in diameter and six inches long. I really don’t see this guy anymore, so I can’t ask him about them.
What cameras and equipment would you guys recommend for theft prevention surveillance of a well lit area at night? Low cost is a big plus, as I will not be willing to invest in defense a greater amount than I ever stand to loose through theft. Somehow though I think that my buddy got the cameras for relatively cheap.
Any other useful observations appreciated.
Thank you.
Here’s some from Radio Shack. Check their website and you’ll find some other types.
The cameras your friend had sound like the ones from X10 (yes, these are the same people that have pop-up ads everywhere). I haven’t used any of their products, so I can’t tell you anything about the quality. The prices seem to be reasonable, but without having used their stuff, I don’t know if it’s worth the money. Hopefully someone with more experience using their cameras will be along shortly.
Can I use my C drive to record the video images?
Will I need special software?
Anyone?
