Well they have been hyping this for sometime and finally today it is revealed. The Segway Scooter is supposedly going to change the way people get around in their day to day life. Here it is:
I seriously doubt this is the revolution that they are hyping. They can say until they are blue in the face that this is going to change how humans modivate around, I doubt it. I like walking. And I think the average Joe does as well.
Why was this phenomenal discovery kept secret for so long, and what exactly makes it Phenomenal? Are we entering the Blade Runner Society, is this the first step? Or is it just Hype? I am curious as to what the Gyrascopes and tilt measures are actually going to do? Have others heard about this?
To my understanding, the Segway was kept secret mostly so that patents could be filed to prevent the product from being ripped off. Seems like a reasonable reason for me.
As for it changing the world, I don’t think it’ll happen either, at least not right away. I believe it will impact a lot of things, though, and it will affect future technology a lot.
I don’t think that, as Steve Jobs said, we will “architect cities around it.” It’s just a freaking scooter. Albeit, a $3,000 scooter, or $8,000 if you’re the federal government…
Except that a scooter actually requires some effort to operate. This thing lets us just stand there and not expend any energy. That’s the last thing this lazy overweight country needs.
(I would have put that in IMHO but there is no Segway thread over there and I didn’t want to get bernse any more pissed off by starting a new one.)
