I got a nice treat the other day, I actually saw a Seinfeld episode that I’ve never seen before. I have no idea how that happened, I watched Seinfeld from the beginning when it was primetime, and AFAIK I’ve seen every eposide multiple times in reruns over the years.
So the other night this Chinese Woman episode came on, and I started realizing I’d never seen it before. I had seen a clip of the part where Kramer talks about not wearing underwear, and his “boys are out there” or whatever. But the rest of the episode was all new to me.
I wonder if it got skipped over in syndication or something?
I’ve seen this dozens of times in syndication – definitely part of the rotation. “My boys need a house” and “There’s nothing between us and him except a thin layer of gaberdine” are two of my favorite lines.
I’d like to see that Kenny Rogers Roasters episode more. The part after Jerry spends the night in Kramer’s apartment and starts acting like him is classic.
This happened to me a couple years ago; it was the one where Elaine dates the pro-life moving guy. Haven’t seen it since, either. But I agree: it was a pleasant treat.
I just caught that one last night! And I think it may be the first time I’ve seen that episode since the original run. I remembered the “pro-life” theme but had forgotten about this exchange between Kramer and Poppie:
Kramer: It’s not a pizza until it comes out of the oven!
Poppie: It’s a pizza as soon as you punch the dough with your fist!
I’ve definitely seen it several times in syndication… her name was Chang, right?
I would love to see the Puerto Rican parade one again, but I understand they’re never showing it because of the protests that came after it was originally aired.
Yes, her name was Chang. Elaine tried to make a racist thing out of Jerry wanting to date a woman he’d only spoken to on the phone, just because she was Chinese. Jerry replied that it wasn’t racist if you liked them because of their race. I was halfway wondering if they never showed this episode because of that.
What’s also funny is that they still air the episode when Kramer is dating a Black woman, but falls asleep on the tanning bed and meets the family essentially in blackface. Given Michael Richards’ career trajectory after the racist shoutdown he had a while ago, I was surprised they kept it in rotation.
Another interesting one is the one where Mr. Pitt has to address the Poland Company about the merger. He’s wearing his riding uniform, and Elaine has to grab him by the lapels to get him to stop looking at the Magic Eye poster. She has ink on her hands, which ends up on his upper lip, and he looks and sounds like Hitler at the end of the ep. Surprising…
They’ve added The Puerto Rican Day back into the rotation, but apparently it gets skipped quite a bit when its turn comes up. I think I’ve only seen it once since they re-added it to the rotation.
Yes, I see this episode in the rotation. I do remember the controversy at the time, but it got overshadowed since that was the last episode before the finale(which was a big deal).
