Last night was kind of quiet around the house so I decided to see what was up with the self-cleaning feature on the oven.
Whoa!!! Talk about disintegration of all matter!!!
That sucker left nothing but ashes in the oven.
Here’s the question: Just how hot does the oven get when it is in “self-cleaning” mode? 600 degrees? 700? Hot enough to melt off all the fat off Marlon Brando?
At least I now what I can do to heat part of the house if I run out of heating oil, or if the price of heating oil gets to $5 a gallon!
“In self-cleaning electric ranges, the oven temperature rises to approximately 875 degrees, the temperature needed to burn off food soil. When the temperature reaches approximately 560 degrees, the oven door locks automatically and the lock light comes on. At the end of the cleaning cycle, the oven turns off automatically. When the oven has cooled down to approximately 520 degrees, the lock is released, the locked light goes out, and the oven door can be opened. The self-cleaning pyrolytic oven is available in both electric and gas ranges.”
One thing to watch out for is the door seals.
I had one that came with a house I bought where the window had been replaced at some point, and the seal had a twist in it. When turned on, the house filled with smoke, driving us out and setting off the dectectors so the neighbors called the fire squad. It took a lot of fast talking to prevent them from destroying my home with their axes and hoses.
After a day, though, the smell was gone. Unlike a real fire, no ash got through the house to damage things.
