Why are more and more employers requesting people to self-id their race, sex, and veteran’s duty, if applicable. Does the US Federal Government require employers to collect this info? And, how do we really know it is not used against us? Is it better to opt out and not self-identify yourself? Or, is it a Catch-22?
Companies doing business with government agencies often have to prove that they don’t discriminate in their employment practices, and being able to show body-counts of various minorities is a plus (actually, it may be mandatory for all I know). Having you self-identify your characteristics is probably considered to be more appropriate than someone else hazarding a guess about it.
I remember going through this as a lower-level manager for a large company many years ago and realizing that one of my staff was a female of hispanic origin who had just hurt her foot (qualifying her as being handicapped). Whoopee - triple bonus points!
