I recently borrowed my nephew’s Magna-Doodle[sup]TM[/sup] and created - art! Behold my masterpiece.
Unfortunately, due to the rampant bias in the art world against such non-mainstream media such as Magna-Doodle[sup]TM[/sup], I have yet to find a museum willing to exhibit my creation. Apparantly, many so-called “artists” don’t have the same respect for Magna-Doodle[sup]TM[/sup] as they do for paint, clay, or crucifixes in jars of urine.
It thus appears I am too avante garde for the art world. But worse still, the general public likewise lacks appreciation for my immense talent. My sister said that my work would only gain meaning upon destruction, like one of those elaborate and ephemeral works that Budhist monks make with colored sand. Also, she elaborated, the picture creeped the hell out of her and she wanted to kill it. Luckily for art, I am taller than her and was able to prevent her from grabbing the picture and using the sliding erase bar to demolish this important work.
For now, “Self-Portrait of the Artiste in Magna-Doodle” (alternately titled, “The Grey Man”) is safe. Barring any unfortunate accident, it will remain that way until I can find a buyer or until I get annoyed with the way it keeps staring at me, no matter where in the room I stand.
Do I detect a hint of Picasso in the sophisticated use of chiaroscuro? Or perhaps that is more Goya…
It speaks to me. The subtle tonalities and the expression on the face speak of the loss of innocence and despair. The artist is truely a tortured soul…
Now, stick a wad of chewing gum on the corner and you’ll make millions!
FWIW, BlackKnight, there’s actually a serious artist who has dabbled in Spirograph[TM] drawings. Those works are said to sell for “less than $10,000”. (I’m running out to buy me a Spirograph, yessirree Bob!)
And there’s another guy, a commercially successful hack artist, whose medium is… Crayola[TM] crayons.
But your haunting portrait of Lon Chaney (ha, ha!) has a stark integrity characteristic of the best children’s magnetic toy art subgenre that the crayola works lack. Maybe you need to hook up with the collectors of Etch-a-Sketch[TM] masterworks or branch out into iron-filing portrait toys (I remember one from the 70’s) or the more recent magnetic Make-a-Face[TM]…
Maybe it’s just me but, is it not one of those funny illusions wherein it is a portrait of a man, which, you could view upside down and still see a portrait of a man.
Maybe it’s just me, and yeah, it’s kind of creeping me out a bit.
