Self-purchased drug plans. Do you use one?

We’re barely into our second month of the new year and I’ve watched my $2000 HRA spending account evaporate due to prescription bills. Granted, these are 90-day prescriptions through the insurance company’s preferred mail order provider, but we didn’t feel this kind of pinch last year. The main thing that has hurt us this year is that our 3-tiered prescription plan went the way of the dodo in favor of a new health plan which doesn’t cover meds until we’ve met the $6000 deductible for the year. Once we burn through the additional $1000 I set aside in our flex plan, I’m going to have to eat another $3k in copays before our deductible is met and we start getting a discount on our meds. (Yes, we’ve already done price checks at all local pharmacies and are currently taking advantage of $4 / $10 generic plans when available. We’re even going to use pill splitting of larger doses when possible to stretch our meds a little more.)

Anyway, I’ve been thinking about paying for a tiered prescription drug plan to see if this will ease the pain in our bank account. Do any of you use anything like this to supplement your insurance coverage? If so, how has it worked out for you so far?

Thanks!

Advice is best suited to IMHO.
