I feel like this would be akin to an announcement of “grunge” as the word of the year…in 1999. Am I just creating memories of this being a thing way before this year? If so, my wife has created the same false memories. I don’t get it.
The cool kids have known about selfies for a while. The squares just recently found out what the cool kids are doing.
The critical factor isn’t when the word is introduced, it’s when the word becomes fixed in the public consciousness.

Yes, Slate is correct that neither word has been added to the OED. However, in my experience, people don’t really care which dictionary, it’s the fact that any dictionary does it that pisses people off. You remember the outrage when Google’s dictionary added the intensifier meaning of literally and we got about 10 threads decrying it here on the dope?
Honestly, the word only seems to me to have exploded in the mainstream public consciousness this year, so I can see it.
