Selling a car without the title

I still owe the bank $2,000 on my car. Obviously they are still holding the Title. The car blue-books at $7,500 and I would like to sell it now.

How does this normally work? Will Joe Average be willing to purchase my car without the title, at least for a few days until I can use his cash to pay off the bank loan, get the title, and send it to him?

Or, will the bank be willing to send me the title now, if I agree to pay off the loan in a few days? Or will they just laugh at me?

Anyone with any experience on how this should go down?

Is Joe Average going to pay cash? If so, I’d think you’d be able to conduct the title transfer at the bank. Call your banker and ask.

Hmmm. In some states, the bank would have sent you the title, but the title would show the bank having a lien on the car. Either way, the bank is going to have to be involved in the sale. Talk to your local vehicle title bureau and/or the bank’s loan department, I’m sure they know the procedure.
