I had the opportunity to meet Sen. Saxby Chambliss, the senior republican senator from GA today. He spoke at a synagogue near me. Let me just put it this way, the guy is in no way qualified to represent GA, let alone any state, in the government of the US. It’s lawmakers like him who are the reason we are in such a crappy place today.
Case in point: Someone asked a question about the conflict in Sudan (Darfur), so Mr. Chambliss begins to speak. Starts out with general stuff about the US being the greatest country in the world and having better medical supplies, lawyers, army, etc than any other country… and then started talking about all the sick people in 3rd world countries who could use our help, and how 3rd world countries have less opportunities than us.
It was clear he had no idea what was happening in Darfur. No idea at all. He just rambled, and looking around, you could see everyone whispering to each other. He just kept going blabbering on about how great the US is and can help poor people throughout the world.
Aside from that, all the things he was talking to us about was complete BS. He constantly avoided questions and repeated talking points. There was a question about Terri Schiavo, and whether the federal government overstepped his bounds, which he turned into an answer about somethign to do with how the whole incident was a good thing because now people are writing living wills.
He just didn’t seem like the type of guy who I’d think of when I think of someone to become a senator. I at least imagine some intelligent guy, not this idiot.
P.S: Afterwords, a friend and I went to greet him, shake hands, etc. and my friend asked: “Do you even know what the Darfur conflict is?”, and he said “I’m not very familiar with it.” This guy is on the Senate Intelligence Commitee. :bawling:
Isn’t Chambliss the goat-felcher who ran the campaign ads insinuating that the incumbent, amputee veteran Max Cleland, of aiding or at least sympathizing with Al Qaeda?
Well, the ads questioned Cleland’s patriotism because he didn’t unquestioningly support Bush. Cleland was previously the Georgia Secretary of State, and was a popular senator who strongly supported other veterans. Had John Kerry won last year (I mean officially, as well as actually), I was hoping he might appoint Cleland to head the VA.
There are strong suggestions that some form of voter fraud was involved in Chambliss’ unexpected upset. And based on my correspondence with Senator Chambliss, I’d tend to agree that he’s an unqualified hack. (He keeps writing; fuck him.)
That’s a very good question and I’m glad that you asked it. America is the greatest country in the world…
or
That’s a great question and I’m glad you asked it. If I’m elected, I pledge to answer the tough questions. If you ever have any questions, I’ll be available. I’m a man of the people.
Yes, he’s a tool. As is nearly everyone else associated with any level of government here (so it seems at the moment, anyway. I think our mayor might be ok).
As a hijack, anybody live in a state with good politicians? I had Jesse Ventura in Minnesota (part of a long tradition there of wacko guvs - he was just the loudest), then Tommy Thompson in WI, and now I’m in GA with a bunch of incompetant boobs. Is it better in another state? Maybe I can put in for a transfer…
I actually got a chance to ask him, after the whole speaking thing, about the conflict in Sudan. The conversation went something like this:
“Are you actually familiar with the events occuring in Darfur?”
“Well, I know of it, although I’m not intimately familiar with the information. I do think that conditions there need to be improved.”
Yeah, they sure do need to be improved, idiot. Maybe if dolts like you would stay abreast of stuff like this, you might be able to do something to help.
In a more positive vein, I am going to email his “handler,” who gave me a business card so that I could ask him about such things in the future.
Not us. We have the guys responsible for the bridge(s) to nowhere, and a governor who was, at last check, only a step above Bob Taft in unpopularity amongst incumbent goobers.
