The only similarities I can see between pizza and a pie is they’re both traditionally round and food.
I’m pretty sure nearly everywhere else in the English-speaking world, “pie” refers, in most contexts, to a baked pastry good containing a filling (in the Commonwealth it’s usually meat, but fruit or other sweet fillings can also be acceptable in some circumstances). Certainly, the only people I’ve heard referring to pizza as “pie” hail from the US, and from what I can tell it seems to be a New Jersey/New York/Possibly Chicago term rather than a generic American English name for the dish.

This is unlikely, since Italian doesn’t have a word for “pie”. They use “torta” (cake) to describe an encasing of sweet filling in some kind of pastry, or if it’s a savoury pastry they use “torta salata” (“salty cake”).
Pizza in Italy is - unsurprisingly since it’s an Italian word - known merely as “pizza” - a word that encompasses various kinds of flat bread too, including stuff that’s indistinguishable from focaccia, e.g. pizza bianca.
There may be regional variations, but I don’t think so.
I have a hard time marrying this truly persecuted definition with my prior understanding.
Maybe you should move to a state where same sex marriage is legal.

The real issue is lack of appreciation for the differences between a pie and a tart.
Clearly is should be a pizza tart instead of a pizza pie.
