Frankly, it’s a bit demeaning to genuine literature as well. Or:
What about being proud I haven’t read the books or seen the TV show? My eldest brother read a lot of trashy pop fantasy and I looked up to him, so the twelve-year-old me read a lot of it too — but happily I grew out of it. I suspect that if I read A Game of Thrones I might be less literate than when I started.
It’s not just the SDMB, but on many other message boards I’ve come across, too… Threads for other TV shows are unspoiled. Threads for Game of Thrones come in several versions: nothing spoilered, books spoilered, books and TV spoilered, everything including predictions spoilered … it’s ridiculous. I think it’s just something to do with geek culture. Nobody gives a shot if you said Joan and Roger were an item on a previous season of Mad Men, but mention … oh, Drogo ripping out some dude’s tongue, and you’ll likely feel the wrath of those who might have missed that episode.
Again, no problem with “no spoilers’. I have a problem with “I can’t read the books they are too big and too full of long words and it makes my brain hurts and my lips numb from sounding them all out -thus you can’t even mention that they exist”
The OP seams to struggle with basic reasoning.
Many people in the thread have stated they have not read the books which DrDeth presents as “one poster hasn’t read the books” but then later modifies to include any one who has not read the books.
That not withstanding he seams to equate “not wanting to read the books at this time because they are enjoying the show” to “Senorbeef and his ilk being illiterate”
Surely DrDeth can figure out not wanting something is not the same as not able?
Also where does he get the “seems proud of the fact that he has not read them.” and “But nerds read. Senor Beef does not” from?
Someone is a dumb jackass, I am going with it being the OP.
You can’t read the incredibly simple rule for a single thread, and Senor Beef is the illiterate one? Hm. I don’t think you understand what “illiterate” means (which would make sense).
I am a person who likes to read books. A LOT. All the time, reading books. I love books! As a matter of fact, I make a point to never ever watch a show or movie that’s been adapted from a book without reading the book first.
Except one time-- Game of Thrones. I heard the show was good, hadn’t read the books, and decided to watch a couple episodes. I loved it! And one thing I really really loved about it was the fact that I was surprised by the plot! It was wonderful! So I decided not to read the books until the series ended. I knew it would be hard; I love to read! But the joy I get from watching the show and being shocked by the twists and turns was well worth it.
And then some stupid asshole (you) has to jump in the one place on the whole freaking internet, it seems like, where people can discuss the movie without being spoiled by the book. There are other threads about the fucking show for people who read the books. Go feel superior there, you immature fucknugget. Open 10 threads, and talk all day long about how I can’t read. I don’t fucking care. Just quit talking about the books in the thread for show watchers. It isn’t hard, unless you’re actually addicted to being a shithead. Which, maybe you are. Good luck in rehab.
I +1 miss elizabeth. OP is in the wrong. He didn’t even bother to provide a link to the thread in question. Perhaps he is too illiterate to read that it is considered good form to include links when pitting a poster.
Ah, so Posters get to set their own rules for their OP now? So if my Op had said “no posting here unless you agree with me” you’d honor that?:dubious: We have a long and honored tradition here of a thread turning on a OP and biting him in the ass.
But again, it seems like you also have a problem with reading comprehension. As I said I have no problem with “no spoilers’. Senor Beef doesn’t just make the reasonable request for “no spoilers”- he demands no one *even mention that the books even exist. *
See, and this is why sometimes I despair of the SDMB quest against ignorance. Even tho I have said five times now that “no spoilers’ is Ok, still, you continue to go on about spoilers.
“No spoilers” = OK
“No mention of the books at all since I haven’t read them”= not OK.
This pitting is super lame for a couple reasons. One, there are OTHER threads about the show/books that the OP can spoiler away to his heart’s delight, and two, SenorBeef is a Cleveland Browns fan and therefore deserves pity, not scorn*.
*As a Cincinnati Bengals fan, I never thought I’d live to see the day where I would get to type something like that!
You protest, quite rightly, as you figured out a fairly obvious point with recourse to book knowledge. But the illiterates still jumped all over you- as since you are smarter then they are, you must have ‘cheated” by ‘reading the book”.
Ah, that’d I’d live to see the day on this MB where reading a book is “cheating”. Sad, really.
Generally, I agree. I got very slightly pissy at what I perceived as one poster’s over-the-top attitude in last week’s thread, but really I should have kept my mouth shut to avoid extending the hijack. Generally speaking I think it is perfectly okay to have a no-spoiler thread and while don’t-mention-the-book-exists is slightly more anal than I’d take things, it also doesn’t particularly bother me. I understand where it is coming from.
I read a ton and I love Game of Thrones, but I haven’t read the books and I don’t intend to (at least not until I finish the huge backlog of other books on my list).
I understand the desire for a thread about the show, and just the show; and I doubt it has anything to do with my lack of literacy.
Actually, isn’t that what the rules concerning spoilers are for, to keep people from giving things away in books they haven’t read, or movies/TV shows they haven’t seen?
Well, thanks for generally agreeing with me. Yes, you are right, it’s not really worth a PITing. I put up with it for over 2 years now.
But I happened to just mention the book in a line where I was complaining about HBO’s excessive gratuitous display of torture, and got jumped on by no less that four junior Mods. Mind you, it’s impossible to note that the torture is both excessive & gratuitous without pointing out that the source material didn’t feel a need to show it. There was no “spoiler”, I didn’t point out anything that wasn’t right there on the screen and in fact I was not talking about the book at all, but about HBO’s display of excessive & gratuitous torture. Hell, many have said that HBO seems to show more nudity than the books indicate*, and no one jumped on them.
I didn’t figure out shit, but I was defending the person who did. Again, for someone so gung-ho about literacy, you sure can’t read for shit.
And look, the rule wouldn’t have to be as restrictive as it is if asswipes like you didn’t come in and push it as far as you can, pissing everyone off. I realize (since you keep typing it bigger) that you said you agree with no spoilers; you just want to retain the right to troll the everliving shit out of the thread by bringing up the books and leaving stupid ass hints everywhere. However, the rest of us think your childish shit-slinging is annoying and we don’t want to see it.
Obviously you enjoy derailing threads and consider pissing people off on the computer some sort of divine right, but the rest of us are sick of it and want you to stop. And the mods agree. So suck it.
