I’m interested to know if anyone else has noticed this and why it happens.
I read the boards by clicking “View New Posts” on the main page. Then a list of topics comes up, and on the right is a message that says, say, “Displaying topics 1-20 of 43.” So far, so good. I browse these and then click “Next Page.” But instead of getting the next 20, I get, say, 16 through 20 from the first page, and then more new ones. In other words, there’s overlap from page to page.
How come? Does the new posts “counter” update itself while I’m still reading these pages? It’s a little weird, since I don’t know exactly when I’ve reached the end of the “new posts” threads; I just keep going a little past the 43, or until I recognize threads that are still old. But it’s also not terribly annoying – just a little bur under my anal-retentive saddle.
If anyone can explain this, I’d be very appreciative. Thanks.
And it never failed for me. Sounds like a fluke of timing.
Well, it’s a pretty reliable fluke, then, because it happens darn near every time for me. scratches head
Any other ideas? Mods/admins?
Scarlett76, I don’t use the “View New Post” but I did check into what’s going on.
When you first click it, the system does a search based on any thread that has a post later than your login date/time which is on the front page, too. The search is in post date/time sequence, latest first. No surprises yet.
When the first page is full and you click “Next Page”, everything changes. A new search is initiated, this time it’s all threads in date/time sequence, latest first and then displaying page 2 of the search results.
Since between the two searches new threads can become the latest, you are now displaying threads 21 to 40 to the present thread list in date/time sequence.
I just tested it by getting a fresh “last visit date/time”, then kept clicking the “View New Post” until I got the display to say 1 to 20 of 21. You would think that the 2nd page would have only 1 thread, but NOOOO. It had 21 to 40 of 41,415.
It’s definately a bug. The forum’s thread lists act similar, so it may be working as it’s intended, just not too logical. The 2nd page of a thread list is a new search which means that there can be some overlap if new threads are started.
Hope that helps.
