Any of you FPS fans playing this? I know this is an older game. It must have slipped under my radar all these years.
Steam has this game (which is an older title but with Croteam’s Serious 3 game engine) for $19.99. I read some reviews (which were mostly quite positive) and splurged and bought it.
I must say, for a brainless, popcorn video game its a hell of a lot of fun. Its also hard. Dispensing almost entirely with plot, the game plunges you into a world of crazy-assed monsters and creatures that you must kill to continue advancing, and they come oftentimes in gigantic hordes that can be pretty overwhelming.
That’s okay though, because you get a generous array of equally crazy and powerful weaponry, along with a good amount of powerups and whatnot.
If you like plunging willy-nilly through the Mayan landscape, pilfering temples of their treasures and laying waste to everything in your path, this game is for you.
The graphics are quite good, bright and colorful, although not groundbreaking, it being an older title.
I have to say…it’s a blast! Anyone else playing this?
I looooooooved the Serious Sam franchise. I played through it, then played through it again, laughing my ass off at the stupendously retarded number of creatures they’d throw at you, and finding ever more esoteric ways of killing them off, then played through it AGAIN to find all the secrets (including the little Croteam easter eggs scattered about). Lord, they loved secrets. Then I played through it again approximately 5,000 times just because I thought it was a blast.
I spent way too much time blasting my way through those games, and came to dread the distinctive, distant screams of the suicide bombers.
I did not know that they had updated the engine and rereleased, though. I don’t know if I can bring myself to spend the money on a game I have played through that many times, but thanks for posting.
Well, it appears that Serious Sam 3 will be released sometime this year, although Croteam hasn’t been specific as to a date, and that game will use the new engine that Serious Sam Second Episode HD that I’m playing is using. You might just want to wait.
And man, those headless suicide bombers…aaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!
I’m new to this game, but for some reason I just hate the grenade launcher. I guess I thought the grenades would go a lot farther than they actually do. Perhaps its useful for a close-in horde.
I like the sniper rifle, flamethrower, tommy gun, mini-gun and super bomb (of course) the best. Oh, and the cannon, which I just got. Mowing down vast swaths of those skeleton guys with those cannonballs is loads of fun!
Oh yeah, the cannonballs are great, but they go away so fast! I sort of use the grenade launcher as a low-rent rocket launcher. Just keep holding the trigger until max distance is achieved and keep feeding them to the hordes of raging bulls as you backpedal. They actually work pretty well especially as you get into the 200th wave of critters, and you have to really maximize your weapons use, since all your ammo is just about gone.
Ah, so the distance the grenades travel increases as you hold down the trigger (mouse button…I’m playing on PC)? Damn, wish I’d know that a lot sooner! I would just click once, click once, click, click…and I’m like “These things are almost blowing ME up they are landing so close!”
Yah. The range increases up to a maximum, at which time the launcher will automatically fire. It cycles fairly quickly, too. I remember having the same issue (and I always played the games on PC/mouse too) until I figured out the secret. “WTF?! What good does this stupid thing do m…ooooooooooooooh!”
Oh yeah, and the “charge” feature makes the eventual explosion much more powerful as well. The grenades are great around corners too (or bouncing off a high wall to achieve an air-burst effect that rains Serious damage on everything beneath it).
Oh, and while I’m giving away secrets, you should be aware that the cannonballs charge up in the same way as grenades. Hold the mouse button down long enough, and those cannonballs will shoot out at high speed, and much, much higher explosive power. Great fun.
