To begin with, I closed the other thread because I thought it’d be better for this post to be in its own thread, and I don’t think we need two of 'em going on at the same time.
Secondly, it looks like Tuba’s getting a lot of undeserved flak for this decision, but ultimately I was the guy who sent the e-mail around the mod loop asking whether Seven had crossed the line; I also gave the approval for the ban once enough staff had replied. If you want to point your finger at someone, feel free to do so at me.
That said, I apologize to you guys for the way we handled this. While we have a long-standing rule against complaining about the board as your primary activity, it’s largely been enforced against the newbies who join the board and immediately and frequently start complaining. What we should have done in this case–as many of you have suggested–is to have handed out a suspension. It would have been more consistent with the way we handled long time posters since PTP went into effect, and the exclusion of it in this case made everything seem less transparent than what we had intended. Obviously, that was short-sighted on our part.
In light of all that, we’re changing Seven’s banning to a thirty day suspension with yesterday as the start date.
Well, it’s a step in a better direction. Is there any way to update a rule or two or the moderator’s understanding and implementation thereof? I get that flexibility is required, but at least put some generalizations with the caveat that it will be up for individual consideration? ETA: With the idea in mind that a poster shouldn’t get admonished and then have to ask “Ok, so apparently this isn’t allowed, is that?” to figure out how to get along here.
That’s very gallant of you to stand in the way of the flak sent at Tuba, but calling it undeserved is simply inaccurate. The problem started because Tuba was rude as she often does and she doesn’t like it when people return the favor.
And the idea that IW presented in the previous thread that one should take those complaints to Ed is simply laughable*. The chances of Ed siding with anyone against Tuba are exactly zero, no matter how egregious Tuba’s fault had been.
So although you may have been the one who pushed the ball around, the root source of the problem is still Tuba.
We now return to the parade of people saying how this makes TPTB a class act.
*Although I would like to commend IW for the efforts to manage the crowd while the fumata nera was still pouring out of the council chimney.
ETA: And this is as good a time as any to remind you of my idea of somehow making some form of fumata nera post that tells people that the silence of the mods is not contempt but just eating the Twix while you think of something.
Sapo, Sapo, Sapo. Since your suspension, I’ve noticed you’ve been a pretty insightful poster. Rational. But now you disappoint me.
How, pray tell, do you have such magic insight into the working of the Moderation of this Board? You been reading our mail? Some mole telling you what is going on? Or are you just making this up as you go along?
Every word Skip said is true. Exactly as it went down. You’re simply incorrect.
And, no, TPTB may not be a class act to you or others. Never will be. Just trying to do a tough job, trying to carve a path between doing what is fair, reasonable, and ultimately, what is right. Reversing ourselves, this time, was the right thing to do.
