Then I’d support that. I think the basics are pretty simple and widely known but I don’t have a problem with that idea and I’ve suggested things like that before. We have multiple stickies on top of every forum and it’s too much reading material and perhaps an intimidating number of rules and guidelines. Overall posting here isn’t that complicated and I think we could make that clearer.
I usually don’t poll the mods before posting, but no, I don’t think anybody likes dealing with that. And while most of us would normally tune that stuff out, as moderators we were basically required to wade through it. I don’t think it was too much to ask that some of it be dialed back.
ashman165 had been here for only about a month and such short-term users don’t always get formal banning announcements. But he’d been rising through greater levels of jerk-itude as his stay wore on and his final thread was far over the top. He was banned for that.
The fact that it doesn’t bother you is actually irrelevant: we have a rule against using insulting and abusive language against other posters, whether they are members of the staff or not.
So, no, don’t call anyone else who’s posting on this board an asshole.
If, however, you wish to call yourself an asshole, knock yourself out.
Understood and thanks for the answer. So. Let me try and understand this again please…bear with me?
I can call myself an asshole but, even in the pit, I can’t call someone else an asshole? If so then y’all better start doing some serious cleaning of the various fora cause it’s all over the place…well, at least it is in GD which is where I usually hang out.
Nope, you’re right – I should have said “except in the Pit.”
In the forums I’m currently moderating – MPSIMS, Cafe Society, and the Game Room – I would give you a warning for calling anyone other than yourself an asshole.
Thanks. That was how I remembered it. Now I’m gonna have to go Haunt CS and call myself an asshole in every other post…
Damn, it took *this *to make me agree with Liberal.
Yes, a lot of dudes here screamed about the banning. But think about it- he has never added anything of value here. Yes, they changed it to a suspension, but that just means at the end of his suspension he’s going to come back, be a jerk, and get banned.
I mean, he took part of a PM, quoted it, and even added who said it. Does the PRIVATE part of PM mean anything to anyone?
Look, there are dudes who have added things, helped make this board a good place to post and a valuable asset. Complain when one of them gets banned, not this poster.
You wasted a lot of time and hampster power on someone not worth it- who will undoubtedly be a jerk and get banned right after coming back.
Really? You KNOW that in nine years he has never contributed anything of value?
AND you know that he’s just gonna come back and get banned?
You astound me with your prescient vision!
Right, that’s just what we need, more rules, rules of greater complexity, lists covering every possible eventuality, long and arcane discussions of what exactly this or that term means and whether rule 43, subsection ii, para 4a is applicable in cases where members have invoked their rights under the exceptionality clause of rule 14.
Already we see staff subjecting to rigorous analysis phrases such as ‘I’ll fuck them with your dick’ and whether they accord with Language Rules for the Pit (new and revised edition). It was like being transported to the 60s and listening in on the exquisitely courteous military gentlemen who held sway over British drama in the 60s, and who might let an author’s piece through after trading two ‘fucks’ in exchange for a pair of ‘arses’.
We need fewer rules not more, and the simpler and more straightforward the better. To adapt the inscription over the entrance to the Abbey of Thélème, "Do not be a jerk shall be the whole of the law’.
Ok, you are right. Back in the past he used to contribute. But for the last 4 months or so he’s done nothing but attack Liberal (a good target, mind you, but too much is too much) and bitch about this board. Can you see anything to indicate he’ll change for the better?
Yeah, it means that the person who sent it better remember the the term “private” is a request and certainly not enforcible in any practical way, and the sender had better damned well temper what they say accordingly.
“Don’t be a jerk” is also a request, and is enforceable through the same means.
You’re wrong in so many ways but I can let almost all of it go except this: it’s HAMSTER goddamit! Why is that word so hard for people to spell? And get off my lawn too.
No one is calling for more rules. Several people have called in this thread for clarity of the rules that already exist; that isn’t the same thing.
Well, here on the SDMB, it’s been “hampster” as a source of power for the board for a while. Likely due to the silly-but-fun “hampsterdance”.
Ha, OK then. The guy who did the sign on the pet shop down the street better be a Doper though.
Don’t be a Jerk is a rule not a request. It’s written into your faq. “Don’t post hate-mail” is not a rule here (yet).
Snort!:D:D:D
Or…wait.
Was that a mod-note? A mod warning?
No, a Mod-a-rang. Kinda like a Bat-a-rang.
