Several dozen dead in bar fire in Switzerland

Not anymore:

Jacques Moretti, a 49-year-old Corsican, was eventually remanded in custody eight days after the fire but was freed two weeks later on bail of 200,000 Swiss francs (nearly £190,000), paid by an anonymous “close friend”.

Prosecutors this week finally bowed to the demand of victims’ families to open criminal proceedings against the municipality’s head of public safety and a former council fire safety inspector.

And sad news:

Yes, they released him on bail after ‘good friends’ started a go-fund-me campaign. Moretti is involved in the nationalist Corsican freedom movement, which is rumored to have mafia-like structures. He probably financed his real estate in Switzerland and his lavish lifestyle from shady sources. Since Switzerland is very proud of the fact that everything supposedly works perfectly there, on the one hand, and on the other hand, there is enormous collusion within municipal structures (the investigating prosecutor appears together with the accused municipal representatives), it is unlikely that there will be any convictions, or if so, only mild penalties. Who could compensate the victims is anyone’s guess.
Italy (there are several Italian victims) has withdrawn its ambassador in protest against Moretti’s release.

If referring to arson investigators, that has a major stench of corruption. In other countries, an investigation would be underway before the ashes had cooled.

On the other hand, if Italian officials were helping conduct prosecutions, we would have seen many more officials charged already, and possibly allusions to Satanic ritual conspiracies.

Remember, the bar owners “are victims too”.

Huh? That’s a non sequitur to me. What do you mean by that?

The Satanic angle has cropped up in famous Italian criminal cases, including the Monster of Florence investigation and the Amanda Knox prosecution. A common link was a besotted Italian prosecutor named MIgnini.

Hopefully current Italian prosecutors are not as obsessed with Satanic cult influences.

Mildly interesting sidelight: the Monster of Florence case, like the bar fire, had a Corsican connection.

Italian prosecutors are also notorious for targeting people seemingly peripheral to a crime or natural disaster, for instance going after seismologists for not accurately predicting a major earthquake.

This I have heard of, but not the Satanic angle. Thanks for the explanantion.

I’m here at Crans-Montana now. One of the employees in the hotel I’m staying at lost two friends in the fire. He almost went too, but said he declined because he had to work the next day.

@robby

Have a good time, I won’t say more since this might turn out to be a hijack.

Checking out pre-fire Google reviews of Le Constellation, it seems that while overall ratings were good, the minority that were very critical got blistering responses from the owner and manager.

One such response said “We despise people like you” (the customer) and another said they would be reporting the complaining customer, a student, to his school administration. Another bad review came from a customer who said his wallet was stolen, that the bar wouldn’t look at security footage and implied they were crooks and that he’d heard they were associated with the Mafia. The Le Constellation response was to say they would report him to the police. Nice folks.

A bit of irony (if that’s the word): someone was critical of a (previous) New Year’s Eve experience, claiming the joint was almost empty except for a few underage kids. The owner/manager responded nastily while saying that the atmosphere really revved up on New Year’s Eve starting at 1 a.m. :face_with_spiral_eyes:

Oh, and the Google listing says the bar is “Temporarily closed”.

The Summerland fire at Douglas, IoM, in 1973 killed around 50, with another 80 or so injured in the crush. Combustible building materials + Flammable soundproofing material = toxic gases. The fire destroyed the fire alarm wiring.

Yikes. I’ve always treated management berating bad reviews/reviewers as a “stay away” indicator. The best thing for an owner to do is either ignore them or post a generic “Sorry you had a bad experience, we strive to provide the best for all our customers” response.

Too soon.
