According to various sources, the version preserved on LP was recorded at Second City on Jan. 30, 1961, so this is its 50th anniversary!
There was an mp3 circulating, but it’s hard to find. However, a transcript can be found with a little Googling. Here’s one excerpt.
The other preserved lecture was on “Oedipus Rex”, specifically “keeping in mind free will and necessity, we are going to see what would have happened to Oedipus if he had read the book before going on the journey.” The professor plays the part of Oedipus, but the other characters force the fatal choices on him. One of my favorite lines is his reply to the Sphinx, who is eagerly trying to convince him to answer the riddle. She says, “Think of the power—of the glory—”. He says, “I don’t need power and glory, I’m a full professor.”
I actually have the entire Metaphysics lecture on tape, and recently converted it to mp3. My favorite bit is actually at the end, when he asks if there are any questions. “Do fish think?” Although, his solution to Xeno’s paradox, that Achilles couldn’t outrace a tortoise, is also pretty amazing. “He was one sick hero.”
I still want the mp3. I heard it in 1977 and should have stolen it from the library before the thief who did. I went back to hear it again and copy it and it was ‘lost’. And now it appears there are only four copies at four college libraries and none are in circulation. What could it cost to copy it?
