So now that I have a job that allows me much more free time, I’ve decided to pick back up with sewing. I’d like to get a dressform, as my husband is not a good helper with fitting and I’d like to start moving away from patterns and moving towards draping some of my own clothes. I know I can make one out of duct tape and fiberfil, but I’m tempted by an adjustable model. Since I’m trying to lose a little weight and I’d like to be able to make clothes for friends, who are not the same size as me, I don’t want to have an army of dressforms.
So, if you have (or have had) an adjustable dressform, please let me know which model you bought and what its advantages/disadvantages are.
(Mods, I didn’t know if this should be in IMHO or Cafe Society. Please move if I guessed wrong.)
Ohhh. Sewers. For a moment your thread title had me wondering what exactly dress forms had to do with sewage systems…
Um, carry on.
Oh, hey – that was me. I forgot to update it with some information I gathered, which I’ve just now added. Rather than cross-post, go there to read it…and I hope it’s at least somewhat informative.
I studied dress design and I learned to make a dress form by using cheese cloth and wide brown paper tape. You would need a friend to help you if it is for your self. You put the cheese cloth over your (well fitted under clothes) then just apply tape in different directions untill you have your form, then carefully cut it at the back and re-tape the slice.
I used it for people I sewed for, and it was the best fitting form I ever used.
You may try it on a small person first so you get the hang of it.
