I have this halter bathing suit in red. The straps are individual, and tie at the back of the neck. This suit looks great and is very flattering (which was surprising, because I’ve avoided one-piece swimwear since becoming plus-sized). However! The back does not stay up when wet, probably because I’m lacking some of the necessary boobage.
I am wondering if I should just sew on some clear plastic shoulder straps to reinforce the thing. Or can/should I sew the halter straps themselves onto the back of suit AS shoulder straps? The latter is a less reversible method, and I’m not sure how well it would work, but I think it would look better.
I don’t have a sewing machine or tailor in my pocket, so I’m limited to what can be done by a moderate novice with needle and thread.
Is there a seam going straight up the back? If so, I would take it in a little at that seam.
Alternately, you could sew a piece of clear elastic into the inside of the top of the back. I don’t think it would have the same cute style if you changed the straps. If you do decide to sew the straps to the back, pin them where you want them (I’d cross them so they won’t slip off your shoulders) and make certain you can still get in and out of the suit before you sew them down.
I often make a similar alteration to hatters that tie behind the neck, which doesn’t seem to work for me somehow. It’s pretty easy to do, pin it first and try it on, so you’re certain it’s just right, but the sewing is pretty easy.
If you’re hand sewing it, just try it on before cutting anything off the ties, and if you don’t like it, it’s easy enough to just pull out the stitching and revert back to how it was originally.
When you are trying on the pinned (per suggestions of other posters) suit – step into the shower, to verify that the fix works for problem you originally reported.
The last time we were at the beach, a woman we were talking with went behind the sea-grapes and changed suits before going in for a swim. She explained that one suit was for sunning, and one for swimming. Is that a common thing?
Amazingly helpful, I’ll try this. I just need to decide if I want them in an X across my back or not.
I have no idea! I don’t think this suit is intended for sunning, although that sounds hella classy. Lots of women can wear halter tops, I’m just apple-shaped so that doesn’t work for me with a one-piece. Things that fit my midsection and lower half tend to be too big on top. With swimsuit separates, I always have to get tops one size smaller than the bottoms.
I have seen swimsuits with tags saying ‘do not immerse in water - spot clean only’ (or whatever the equivalent is in French). Those suits had a bunch of beading and feathers and shit on them and were for sale for outrageous prices in snooty boutiques in St. Barthelemy.
And that’s the extent of MY knowledge of swimsuits that you can’t wear in the water.
