Sex And The City 2: Film Review

I was a huge fan of the series and I even enjoyed the first movie. But I won’t be seeing this one. The worst episodes of the series were the ones where the girls left NYC for places like LA and the Hamptons. I can’t imagine what the writers were thinking sending them off to Abu Dhabi. And lord help Aidan - he should know better than to go within 500 feet of Carrie.

The series was clever, observant and hilarious. All that’s been sucked out in favor of shallowness and materialism. No thanks.

That review was awesome in ways I can’t even articulate and sums up pretty much everything I hate about SATC.

What a pile of putrid, stagnant sewage.

I took my wife (my good deed for the day…), she is a BIG fan of the HBO series and liked the first movie. And even she hated it.

I just got back, so I wanted to post this reply before reading any of the posts in this thread (other than the OP), so if any of you want to contest this quick review, feel free. You don’t have a leg to stand on with this shitpile.

I am amazed that anyone enjoyed it. The theater I saw it in was less than 1/10th filled, mostly women and poor saps like me going with their significant other. I heard a few laughs, but for the most part, it was not the fun time the OP had.

I’ll go back now and see how wrong I am, but according to my wife, a big SATC fan, I hit the nail on the head with my review. She was very disappointed.

OK, I just read the review in The Hollywood Reporter, by Stephen Farber.

My conclusion, based purely on that review, is that Stephen Farber is a homosexual. And he can’t review movies for shit.

Now off to rotten tomatoes to see how the mass reviewers saw this 2.5 hour torture fest. If your doctor tells you that you have less than 3 hours to live, ask to see this movie immediately. Your life will seem to drag on…

Rotton Tomatoes gives it a 16%. My faith is somewhat restored in my own movie judgement.

Thanks for that little jolt of homophobia! Isn’t his lack of ability to review movies enough?

The guys at Project Rungay recap shows like Lost & Mad Men when they aren’t critiquing the world of fashion. They loved SATC on HBO but “didn’t love” the 1st movie. What did they think of the 2nd one?

They do go on about why they hated the movie. In great & amusing detail.

LOL!

That wasn’t a shot at homosexuals. The only reason I wrote that was because the OP called himself a card-carrying homosexual because he went to see the movie and liked it. I figured that any male reviewer that liked the movie must also be gay.

Apparently it’s a science fiction film.

Saw it this afternoon with two girlfriends. Not as good as the first one. If you like the characters and followed the HBO series, it’s probably worth a look. Random comments:

The clothes are outrageous and not in a good way.

The plot wanders all over the place. It feels like a patchwork quilt.

The whole movie is way too long.

The scene between Miranda and Charlotte discussing motherhood is the best scene in the movie and the most genuine.

I never liked Big in the series, but his character is quite likable here.

Samantha is over the top and becomes a parody of herself in an embarrassing way.

Carrie’s hair looks like crap throughout the movie. And she wears those insane four-inch heels AT HOME. The first thing I do when I get home is kick off my shoes, even if they’re flats.

I’m dragging my boyfriend to see it soon. I figure things like this make up for all the god-awful horror/slasher flicks he makes me go see.

Oh my. He will be thoroughly punished. There ARE a couple of graphic but fleeting sex scenes. Also more nipples than I have ever seen. Charlotte wears a pink suit (or maybe it’s more of a two-piece dress) early on and I don’t see how her nipples can show through it, but they do.

In order to make the experience more tolerable for your bf, you could ask him to count the nipples. That will keep him engaged for the ENTIRE movie.

Was that REALLY Liza Minelli? Her face lacked animation, but she had some good moves.

Well, seeing as we’re a gay male couple, I don’t think that will help.

Okay…

ThelmaLou does a 180…*

He will in any case be thoroughly punished… and counting all the nipples could still be amusing.

I’m a straight male, and I didn’t count the nipples. In fact, the only nipples I saw were the ones from the braless nanny through her shirt.

Not too much of a spoiler there, so I don’t think it needed the spoiler box.

I will make some random comments in a day or two when I have some time. But ThelmaLou’s are on target. Her comment about Samantha is particularly accurate.

Best movie review ever.

Every review mentions the obvious “Erin-go-braless” joke at the Irish nanny’s expense. I don’t get it, what does that even mean and why is it obvious?

“Erin go bragh” is an Irish expression, not sure what it means maybe. “Ireland forever” or something? Sorry. An Irish person please straighten me out.

Anyway, my friend that I saw it with has a daughter named Erin, so this line is oooold in her family.

Interesting that y’all didn’t see the nipples poking out everywhere. Through fabrics where they never would IRL.

Married heterosexual male here. I freely admit that I watched and actually liked the series.
Saw the first movie with my wife and kind of enjoyed it; not the greatest film ever, but I didn’t mind watching it at all.

The second film was bloated and self-indulgent, bordering on self-parody. I guess I should have known what I was getting into when the film began with Liza Minnelli officiating at a gay wedding!Things settled down a bit after that, though, and they set up a couple of plotlines that looked like they could turn out to be interesting, so I had some hope for it. But then they went to Abu Dhabi and the whole thing suddenly ran off the rails. During the “I Am Woman” karaoke number, my wife leaned over to me and whispered, “I owe you for this.”

See, if they really wanted to say something about the way women are treated in some parts of the world, and make a statement about female empowerment, there was every opportunity to do so in a way that would feel real and even poignant. But by the time Samantha, after being repeatedly advised to respect the culture and refusing to do so, gets arrested for groping a guy in public, and ends up in the middle of the market square screaming and swearing and flipping off the local males, and then the girls get rescued by a pack of Arab women wearing cutting-edge designer fashions under their burqas…the whole thing had become a cartoon. Samantha, in particular, is now a ludicrous caricature of her former self.

Carrie and Big’s story was OK, though the stuff with Aiden seemed forced. And I never really liked Big and still don’t.

Miranda’s and Charlotte’s stories had the most potential and felt the most real, and were both given weak, tacked-on resolutions.
Miranda had quit her job because of an asshole chauvinist boss, but then longed for something more than being a stay-at-home mom. But now it’s OK! She got a better job and now she’s happy! Yay!

Charlotte is worried that Harry may be cheating on her with the hot nanny. And Kristin Davis played the insecurity and uncertainty, and the challenges of motherhood, quite well. And in the end, we know that Harry wasn’t cheating. Why? Because she realizes he loves her and is a good and faithful husband? Nah. It’s because hot nanny is a lesbian! Ha Ha! Lesbians are funny, and men are stupid.
Despite the money to be had, the creators of SATC would be well-advised to realize that the story arcs of these characters are complete, and they should leave well enough alone. Sadly, though, I predict *Sex and the City 3 *coming to a theater near you in Summer 2012.
