Just wondering if anyone else who liked/loved the series is not interested in seeing the movie? I don’t know…I really thought they wrapped up the series nicely. Where can/will it go from here?? It just seems so forced. From the preliminary reviews, the movie is not good. I feel like they just threw money at everyone who was involved in the series until they agreed to do a movie.
Anyone else feel meh?
BTW…NOT interested in a Sopranos movie, either! I’ve heard rumblings of this!
I also never saw the series (and haven’t sought it out on reruns or DVD) so it’s no big deal for me. I don’t have any problem with a fan wanting to see it either for closure or just as a reunion.
I was a fan of the series and I will see the movie. The reviews I’ve read so far are decent.
The movie wasn’t necessary at ALL but that doesn’t automatically mean the movie will be crap. But I will admit the marketing campaign leading up to its release has been tiring to say the least.
I have never seen any episodes of the television show, so I am not exactly going to line up to see the movie. I do live in The City, so I think I will celebrate its release by going home and having sex.
[Family Guy] So it’s a show about three hookers and their mom? [/Family Guy]
I could never understand the appeal of the show. I saw a handful of episodes and thought it was awful. A bunch utterly shallow, superficial rich women whining incessantly as though they had real problems. Tony Soprano had better values than these bitches. There are few movies I’d want to see less. I’d rather watch Holocaust footage. I’d rather watch that Ben Stein Creationist movie again. I’d rather watch an operation on my own asshole. I know this thing is popular, but why anyone would want to spend two and a half hours watching breathlessly to see whether Sarah Jessica Parker marries that tool Chris Noth is something I will never be able to understand.
The reviewer on Fresh Air today said if you liked the show, you’ll love the movie, but if you didn’t like the show … I believe “Chinese water torture” were his exact words.
My ex-wife loved the show so I would watch it with her. I’m mildly curious what about what they’ll do with the characters but I can live with the Wikipedia summary.
That’s what I thought too, after watching bits and pieces of a few episodes. Then HBO ran it from the start and nothing else was on, so I gave it a shot and I liked it. These women are all very insecure, and that was an eye-opener. The episode where Samantha (the “slutty” one) had the flu and her drapes fell down on her bed and none of the men she called for help would respond because she needed help, not sex – I got all teary.
I’ll wait for the DVD though. I doubt the movie will play in the family-friendly theaters nearby.
Straight Northern/Western mail - ditto. (I don’t think location counts, and I’m not sure about straightness.) One of the best reasons for not getting HBO. Thank Og my wife has no interest in this at all. Is there any straight male in the country who would see this without major incentives from his SO, if you know what I mean and I think you do?
And the ads! Sara Jessica Parker in that dress is the black hole of ugliness.
This didn’t trouble me as much as the idea that women were supposed to identify with and see themselves in these characters. I find it kind of scarey when people say stuff like “Oh, I’m a Carrie!” Really? You would cheat on your nicest boyfriend (aiden) and blackmail one of your best friends into producing the downpayment on your mortgage because you’ve squandered your salary to the tune of 40K* worth of designer shoes?
I thought the first couple of seasons were sort of funny (esp. when they were still doing street interviews a la Real Sex) but it got increasingly soap operatic as time went on and then I was supposed to identify with the characters instead of laugh at them. Or something.
I always get disturbed by the line “You have to forgive me”. It’s a very selfish thing to say to somebody you have betrayed, even if it’s an expression for how sorry you feel.
I’ve seen more of the show than I care to remember, because I like to be with my girlfriend when she’s enjoying something. But I’m waiting for her to ask me if I want to see the movie, so I can say, “Okay! Can I bring a gun and one bullet?”
If I recall, the cretinous, chain-smoking, egocentric protagonist Carrie not only bought $40,000 worth of shoes, but was incapable of doing the math required to multiply 200 pairs of shoes by $200 and come up with the correct figure. And in spite of her complete lack of writing ability, she gets paid what must be an absurd amount of money to do a halfwit pseudo-clever column, and gets a book deal. God, I hate that character. Does she die in the movie? I hope she fucking dies.
(No reflection on Sarah Jessica Parker, who’s a good actress and should spend her time doing better material.)
