Sex And The City 2: Film Review

So here is Hollywood Reporter’s review of the new Sex And The City 2 film.

Proving without a shred of doubt that my SO and I are card carrying homosexuals, we will be going to see the film. Quite fun to be almost the only guys in the theater, other than a few other Gay men and the occasional boyfriend/husband who is attending to serve penance for some grievous misdeed.

(Note to hetero guys: Should you want to meet several hundred women at your local multiplex this weekend…)

OK, so we saw it yesterday.

If you liked the HBO show (which apparently, not many on this board did) you will really like SATC2.

It is much funnier than the first one.
It has the ultimate Gay wedding scene that is so over the top, it makes Richard Simmons seem butch.
The sets and scenery were beautiful, and needless to say the clothes made it seem like you were watching a runway show during Fashion Week.
There were lots of borderline politically incorrect references, but it worked - not sure how this film will fare in the Middle East.
Pretty simple plot - but that is not why you go to see the film. Still, the simple plot worked in its favor, as it allowed for more sight gags, one-liners and small sub-plots that kept the film moving at a good clip - despite the 2 1/2 hour running time.
Considering the length of the film, this was about equivalent to watching an entire season in one sitting.

So yes - it is frivolous, mindless fluff - but it was fun.

We liked it - and they stamped our Gay Card on the way out, so we are officially homosexuals until at least the premiere of SATC3.

Speaking of the gay thing, haven’t seen it but did you think it was weird that they married off Anthony and Stanford? In an ep, Charlotte tries to set them up and Anthony gets really pissed and is all, “All I have in common with him is that I’m gay.” I was glad they didn’t go the, “Oh, two gay guys, match!” in the show but they did seem to go that way in the movie. Plus we hadn’t until now seen any hint that they were at all interested in each other beyond that, I don’t think?

2.5 hours? kill me now. i promised to go see it tonight.

That is all explained, briefly, in the film - plus, there is somewhat of a twist to their relationship.

A twist? I’m intrigued. Can you tell me in spoilers–I’ll see it at some point but not soon.

Ain’t Max Ryan dreamy?

Anthony is allowed to cheat, but only in the 45 states were they’re not legally married.

I liked, but the plot seemed weaker than the first film. I know the whole point was for the ladies (especially Sam) to clash with Middle-Eastern values, but one’d think Charlotte of all people would make a bigger effort to dress appropriately. Also I thought it very strange that the hotel would assign them male butlers.

I’m so glad Carrie did not end up pregnant or even consider having a child.

I also seem to recall that they shared a kiss in the first film.

I can’t remember when I’ve ever read such vitriolic reviews of any movie, but that makes me kind of want to see this. Does Jason Lewis have a part?

Did they? I guess I’ve repressed most of that because I don’t remember it at all. Then again, I think I’ve forgotten a great deal of what went down in that one.

They were both at the same New Years party and were happy to see each other because the party sucked and it was good to see a familiar face and shared a New Years kiss, IIRC. Guess they realized then they did not in fact hate each other like they did previously.

I thought this film was fun but I left feeling empty.

I think Big forgave Carrie for kissing Aidan VERY easily…and pretty unrealistically. You kiss your ex-fiancee and get a black diamond ring? And her ‘oh we are boring’ subplot was not as interesting as the other girls’ were and got WAY WAY more screen time devoted to it. But she is the main character I suppose.

I feel like we need one more movie on quality par with the show/first movie that really wraps up the story with these characters. If this movie is the end I will be pretty disappointed. It had me laughing a lot but the end was horrible and only like three minutes long to wrap everything up. I don’t feel like their story is complete after this film. I felt it more complete after the first film and this was just a bonus.

Since it was actually shot in Morocco, the previews I’ve seen on TV remind me of the Absolutely Fabulous set there. Fashionistas go wild! Inappropriately!

I didn’t catch the whole SATC series on TV but can understand the appeal. This review (on io9) almost makes me want to catch the new movie…

I’ve never watched Sex and the City, or the first movie, and yet some of the absolutely scathing reviews make me want to go see it, in the same way that one wants to slow down for a train wreck. I don’t know if it’s the current economic situation, or the almost purposefully colonialist decision to set the movie in the middle east, but I haven’t seen critics loathe a film so much in a very long time. A lot of movies are dumb, or terribly done, but this one truly seems to make people hate it on a personal, moral level. I’m impressed.

Theres actuall a character named Mr Big?

No don’t tell me, I don’t want to know. I’ve never seen the program or the movies.

But I did see Stephen Colbert’s recent reviews, calling them “shopaholic whores.”

My wife was a big fan of the series, and she has absolutely no intention of going to see the movie. She actually said to me today, after seeing previews and reading reviews, “I think this might actually be the worst movie ever made.”

Apparently the product placement is so shameless that it makes the James Bond franchise look like a model of consumer restraint. The New York Post made much of this in a typically-trashy broadside at Sarah Jessica Parker.

I should add, i wonder how much the Post’s critique is a product of misogyny? I admit to not being a regular follower of the trashy rag, but i wonder if they’ve ever asked this question about a male film star who earns millions of dollars for making movies:

I see that Rotten Tomatoes has ranked SATC2 with a whopping 15% approval!
That is actually pretty funny itself.

As I mentioned above, the film is most certainly frivolous, mindless fluff. If you liked the series, you’ll like the film. I seriously doubt anyone who is not a fan of the HBO series will be standing in long lines to go see it.

There are lots of film franchises that have hard core fans that are impervious to reviews. Do you think the Twilight fans will refuse to go see the new one if it gets horrible reviews?
Same goes for the upcoming (2) Hobbit films - I doubt even a 1% Rotten Tomatoes rating will stop those films from being swarmed by fans - myself included.

That said, The Hollywood Reporter estimates it will be the big weekend box office winner, with an estimated $60 million haul by Monday. In other words, there are enough fans of the show to keep this franchise churning in Jimmy Choo shoes for many years to come, scathing reviews and all.

I don’t know if it’s gauche to link to reviews one finds amusing, but here is one that will make haters of the movie or show laugh their butts off. :stuck_out_tongue:

I didn’t hate the series, or the first movie, but have a feeling the second movie would bore me.

I’d never dream of seeing this movie - but that review almost makes me wanna.

Excellent review. My wife loved it too.
