Sex & The City final episode - SPOILERS

John? We waited six years to find out his first name is John?

I had the same reaction initially but I think that was the point. That his name is John and that he’s not so Big and mysterious after all.

I really enjoyed tonight episode. I was a little disappointed with how they split Carrie and The Russian but I’m happy she’s with Bi–er, John.

I’m just upset cause now I won’t have anything to look foward to next Sunday night.:frowning:

I ended how we all wanted it to end. Carrie back in NYC, with her friends and maybe going to end up with Big (and we get to know his name). All of the other girls ended up fully evolved, Miranda able to show true compassion, Samantha able to feel true love and Charlotte’s fairy tale coming true in a way she never imagined.

I was disappointed in the name John too until I read fizzestothetop’s excellent observation.

Haj

As a guy who never really liked this show-- I pretty much got stuck watching with my girlfriend on Sundays while waiting for The Sopranos to come on-- I found myself watching this final season despite the fact said girlfriend is no longer in the picture. And I have to say this season was the best of all of them.
Don’t tell anybody, but I actually found a tear in my eye when Miranda’s nanny confided in Miranda about the bath. I think I always kinda despised this show because the women were so fucking self-absorbed. It was nice to see them all give a shit for someone beyond themselves.

I loved that we found out Big’s name, and it’s fine that it’s John. I loved that the storylines weren’t wrapped up so tightly that there isn’t more to wonder about (and make movies about-- I’m so there). I really loved this show, and I’m sad it’s over, but I’m glad everyone got a happy ending.

What do folks think about the movie possibilities? Any ideas? The Carrie/Big wedding, maybe?

No way. Smith/Samantha wedding.

Haj

Upon reflection, I realize I love Curb Your Enthusiasm for the same reason I say I despised Sex & the City-- the self-absorbedness of the lead character.

Does that make me a chauvenistic pig, unwilling to accept independent self-promoting women as lead characters?
If so, I sincerely apologize.
BTW, I kinda wish I didn’t know Big’s first name. I kinda liked not knowing.

Happy

I’ve watched the show on and off for a while. ( Basically, when we pay for premium cable, which is only when we cancel and they entice us to stay on with a freebies package.)

When Charlotte and whatever her husband’s name is find out they were going to get a baby …I cried for them.

(Since I’ve missed most of last two seasons, has Charlotte always been jewish or did she convert when she married her husband?)

I think they ended it just right. Everybody’s lives having satisfaction where we least expect it and continuing on on a positive note.

I hope when the DVD comes out they put the alternate endings that were filmed on as extra footage. That would be nice.

Yeah, Charlotte converted when she married Harry. It was her one and only [lame] storyline of the last season. I was happy that she finally got her baby and the fairytale ending that wasn’t exactly what she expected but you know she was happy. I actually loved how all the characters’ stories ended; I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way for any of them (even though Steve’s mom’s stroke came out of nowhere).

That scene at the hotel with Big was about as contrived as it gets. Gahh, I’m glad this show is finished. It glorified all the worst possible values. The only thing that matters about men is how much money they have. The women are all sluts and none of them are fit to be parents. I see no reason to cry because some self-absorbed rich lady buys herself a Chinese baby. Mr. Big has zero personality, charm or intelligece. He’s just a smarm in a suit with a bank account. There wasn’t one likable thing about any character in this show and nothing realistic either. the whole show was a celebration of shallowness, materialism and egoism.

Sorry to piss all over the thread. I’ve been wanting to rant about this show for ages. Forgive me. Carry on.

I rather liked how we learned Big’s name…

… and hated the way the writers broke up Carrie and Petrovsky. I swear there’s a secret rule in the Hack Screenwriter’s Handbook about how to break up a romantic triangle - reveal that one of the characters is a complete asshole and completely unsuitable partner. Makes it so much easier to sympathize with the person who’s doing the choosing if they’re not faced with a real choice at all. I’m somewhat ambivalent about the implied continued romance between them. Big was never good for Carrie, and it would be nice if she realized it.

Somehow disappointed in the end of the Miranda story. It’s the one story of the four where it feels like the smart, independent woman is being forced into a traditional role as some sort of punishment for breaking stereotypes. I agree, Steve’s mom’s stroke came out of nowhere, and I just don’t see where it was necessary.

Charlotte’s baby, well… I was gratified with the adoption part, but rather irritated by how the parents of the other potential adoptee were made out to be ignorant rubes.

Samantha - now that I liked, aside from that one clunky bit of dialogue about how she’s never felt that way for another man. Hunky actor boy seems a little too good to be true, and way too good for Samantha, but I prefer that to what’s been done with Miranda.

As a fellow man (which means I could be seen as the same as you fear ;)), I saw no you aren’t. The difference is that Larry in Curb Your Enthusiasm is self-absorbed, but basically comes off as an ass to everyone else, and seems to be looked badly at by the rest of the characters in the show. In Sex in the City it almost seems the self-absorbedness is celebrated.

Anyway, I wasn’t that much of a fan of the last show. I agree with Selkie’s quibbles. The Carrie-Petrovsky ending was too silly, IMO. So she comes to Paris and suddenly now he’s a prick who says you knew this now deal? I don’t buy it. Especially seeing how different he was in NY. That’s the main part that irked me. Would have been much better if she did have to make a real choice.

Amen brother.

For the record, I spend some time in the world this show takes place (that being NYC high society). Sex in the City showcases the worst kind of shallow, wealth obsessed, self-loving/loathing that sadly does in fact pervade that subculture. But, clearly it makes for great TV.

I agree with Diogenes.

**The only thing that matters about men is how much money they have. **

  • Actually, it was about finding true love…not money. She could have been waaaay richer if she stayed with the Russian.*

The women are all sluts and none of them are fit to be parents.

What does their sex lives have to do with their parenting abilities?

**I see no reason to cry because some self-absorbed rich lady buys herself a Chinese baby. **

What makes you think she bought a baby? Tons of people adopt overseas orphans. And most of them aren’t rich.

It pisses me off that Carrie ended up with Big/John one episode after she called him on all of his shit for the way he treated her. Remember that great scene where she told him to get the hell out of her life forever? Forever lasted, what, a month?

I wasn’t disappointed with the way the Russian changed after going to Paris. Different environments breed different behaviour.

Disagree that Miranda is being “forced into traditional roles” or, if she is, it’s her own doing. She chose to continue her pregnancy. She chose to marry into Steve’s family. Strokes and other health issues in older people do come on without warning. I saw Miranda’s willingness to open herself and her home to Steve’s mother as an act of maturity, not an act of getting trapped.

I suspect people that think of these ladies as self-absorbed are either parents or are overly dependent on their others. These are single people with good jobs. They spend their money on their own enjoyment. It’s not like Carrie is starving a baby at home to go buy shoes.

Besides, even if they are, a show isn’t BAD because its characters are self-absorbed. Like someone said, same with CYE, or Seinfeld, or why would you like a movie like “Resevoir Dogs” – its filled with rotten folks. This show is just better written and better acted than anything else on TV.

Also, newsflash: Petrovsky didn’t become an asshole when they moved to paris. He was always an asshole. I don’t know how or why so many people missed this. he might not have been as asshole from square one. But shit, the first night she spent at his house she came downstairs the next morning to have breakfast with him and his employees were standing around working. he was an asshole at the dinner party. he was an asshole when she brought her friends by one night. he was an asshole about the espresso machine. she only went to france with him because she got freaked out by what she might become.

I was happy with the episode. it really gave you what you wanted. somewhat disappointed that it’s going off the air but its better to go out while still good than to linger on too long.

I just wanted to chime in and say that I thought the show was great.

I especially loved it when Big announced that he was going to kick some Russian ass. haha

I liked how they played out all the story lines. I couldn’t be happier that Carrie is with Big. AND, I was crying when Sam told Smith that she cared more for him than any other man she’s known. What a compliment. hee hee

AND, I also cried when Magda kissed Miranda’s forehead. What a sweet moment…

I actually kind of liked the show. It seemed superficial much of the time, yet they did deal with some fairly heavy topics…impotence, cancer, and infertility just to name a few. The theme of man-as-walking-bank-account-in-an-Armani-suit was very much in evidence, but Steve the bartender, with whom Miranda finally ended up, certainly belies that pattern. I do agree with the comments above egarding “John”/“Big”, who behaved like an eight-year-old when Carrie took up with a jazz musician…“oooh man, Carrie likes jaaazzzz!” As characters or people, all her other boyfriends through the show seemed more interesting from my male perspective.

You were expecting E. Plinth-Garnell, perhaps? Or Everard Chomondely-Marjoribanks, pronounced Chumley Marchbanks?
