Has that been confirmed? I remember there being a thread about this a long time back, and from all the interviews and everything else, they two of them were being very vague as to whether or not it was a real or prosthetic penis. My guess is it was a fake.
Still, with the exceptions of a few rumors going around out there, I’m pretty positive a good 99.9% of R rated sex is nothing but stimulation.
SIMULATION! I mean simulation. Although, I still have to wonder about oral sex scenes like those in Body of Evidence and Indescent Proposal. I mean, if you had to pretend to go down on Demi Moore, how much “acting” would you do?
Yeah, I’ll bet it’s really erotic. Just you and your co-worker, with about twenty production workers standing around, hot spotlights on your sweaty butt, worrying about whether you’re doing what the director wants, ten or fifteen takes in a row.
I heard way back that Mickey Rourke and Carre Otis had real sex in Wild Orchid. Also, in Y Tu Mama Tambien, there’s a scene in a hotel room between the older woman and a young-ish (teen, I guess) boy where it’s extremely obvious that he’s naked- seen from the back- and standing by the bed while the woman sits on the bed and gives him oral.
If I was that actor and that hot chick was “simulating” oral on me for a rather long time, without cuts for maybe a minute or more, I’d have a really hard- um, difficult- time not rising to the occasion.
Seriously, just pointing out that it does work out. The atmosphere of an adult film is no more private or intimate than that of a Hollywood film. The only difference is you probably have a few less crew members on an adult film set, depending on the production, of course.
That said, I’m sure most actors would prefer not to have “real” sex on film. They do try to maintain some air of professionalism, and getting down and dirty on the set might taint that. Just a little.
Little nitpick here, but since you brought it up…
Speaking of Monster’s Ball specifically, the raw quality of that sex scene was part of the point. Sure, you would have known they were having sex if they were just “moaning and groaning under the sheets,” but you wouldn’t have seen just how raw and… uncivilized it was. It was a pretty brutal sex scene, and an important part of those characters’ development.
Many sex scenes in movies are unnecessary, and are obviously there for titillation. However, I would place the number at something more like 60% or 70% of them that are not needed. In many cases, the sex scenes are a part of what’s going on with the characters, and they’re critical to what the movie is expressing. Examples (other than Monster’s Ball) are Iris, Requiem for a Dream, and (duh) Fatal Attraction.
I’m sorry to disagree, but IMO that brutal sex scene in monster’s ball was just a coy to flock the theater with teens for money, once thay found out about it It got me totally by surprise that an Oscar caliber actress like that would do that and I was really turned off (to the movie that is…) by that scnene, but I do realize is just my opinion. Thinking back I really think I would’ve like that movie better without it. In my many many years of watching movies, I dont even know of one movie where the explicit sex was absoultely needed.
I seem to recall rumors floating around that Sharon Stone and Michael Douglas also had “real” sex on camera during the filming of Basic Instinct. I can’t confirm or deny that, though.
Speaking of Michael Douglas, he pops up a lot in these sorts of movies for an Oscar winner. Basic Instinct, Disclosure (even though that one didn’t have any nudity in it), Fatal Attraction…anyone besides me think that Mikey’s a dirty ol’ man?
I don’t know a heck of a lot about the porn industry, but I have heard that due to the lack of privacy, the contrived environment, the need for multiple takes, etc. etc. it’s hard (heh) to find men who are up (heh heh) to the job. It is my understanding that your Average Joe or even your average professional actor couldn’t hack it as a porn star, just because it is so difficult to perform sexually under those kinds of conditions.
Nobody’s mentioned the Jack Nicholson remake of The Postman Always Rings Twice yet. I remember reading at the time it came out that he and Jessica Lang filmed the sex scenes as if they were in an X-rated movie and then edited it to an “R.”
At the time, I interpreted that to say that they had actual intercourse. But thinking about it after reading this thread, I recall that I have seen X-rated movies where the sex was obviously simulated. And movies like Midnight Cowboy and A Clockwork Orange were originally released with “R” ratings.
That would be Jean-Louis Trintignant, and the film must have been “… And God Created Woman”. However, their affair was only a rumour and Trintignant is famous for turning down Last Tango in Paris specifically because of the nude scenes. What you read is almost certainly part of the press hounding that drove him into the army, I’m afraid.
Nobody’s yet mentioned Romance, in which there’s some unsimulated fellatio.
Also, add Don’t Look Now to the “reputedly” column; the rumour about Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland really bumping uglies has been going around for years.
