Sex, poker, and driving: a discussion on self-perception

My skills at poker and driving are easy for me to assess. I have objective evidence I am below average on both.

My sexual skills are more subjective so I gave myself a Gentleman’s C.

I think it’s entirely possible this board has more above average drivers than the general population. The people here are generally more intelligent, thoughtful, and respectful than average. Would you rather the roads be populated solely with youtube commentators, or dopers?

It also depends on what you mean by “average”-mean or median? It is entirely possible for someone to be below the mean but above the median, or vice versa; if we’re talking driving, then most people probably are at least competent, but there will always be loons like that idiot who flew into the overpass yesterday as described in this thread (& video). If drivers like this, in terms of accident and/or ticket rates, are constantly piling on the citations or wrecks, then it is quite possible that 10% of the drivers account for 50% of the incidents, and that will skew the distribution. In which case the “majority” of people can certainly and honestly claim that they are above average (the mean). IOW people in these threads (we had one about 6 months ago on this exact topic) think that the mean indicates that half of everyone will be above the mean, and half below, but no, that’s the median. My WAG is 70% of all drivers are above the mean accident/ticket rates, so to see such a distribution in a poll like this should come as no surprise, and any attempt to play the “gotcha” game in such polls is going to be hindered by this factor.

As for me, I know for a certainty that I am an above-average (in both senses) driver; the only two tickets I’ve gotten in the last 25 years were from a notorious speed trap-happy community, and the only wrecks were 2 little fender benders-one where I tried to back up to give an ambulance more room and hit the guy lurking behind me in my blind spot (yes I was at fault and should have looked first, but hey it was an emergency vehicle). I don’t use the phone or text, practice courtesy and situational awareness (mental map of all vehicles around me), and (for ex.) even come to complete stops at right turns on red, even tho only 5% of the drivers in this town do so.

Sex-no comment, and in poker I am like an open book, so I don’t play it anymore.

I think I’m at least average in bed; my girl would give me higher marks, but she’s biased.

I’m fairly decent at poker. I know not to draw to an inside straight.

I’m definitely an above-average driver. With a little training, my love of speed and aggressive driving could be turned into at least competent race driving.

I’ve driven hundreds of thousands of miles without a major accident, but I’m no racecar driver or anything, so I suppose I’m average. I did once win a (no-pay) online poker tournament, but I’m not a fan of poker really, so I suppose I’m average at that too. As for the other thing…yeah, about that…ah…DianaG said what I was going to say and that’s all I’m going to say for that right now.

I would expect Dopers to be an above-average group with respect to both driving and sex. You get better at driving by paying attention to what’s going on around you on the road, and learning from experience. You get better at sex by being willing to try different things, paying attention to how your partner’s responding, and learning from experience. I would expect Dopers to be better than average in these categories.

Got no ideas on success at poker, though. I’m pretty terrible at it myself.

“Better driver” also needs a good definition.

I can imagine some 19 year old boy who thinks he invincible. He weaves in and out of traffic at high speed, he takes curves at high speed, and narrowly avoids collisions at the nick of time. Years of video games and go-card driving have given him excellent hand-eye cordination and lightning fast reaction times. He is the best in the land at handling a motor vehicle, but because of the situations he puts himself in, he has about 1 accident a year.

I would consider this guy a “better driver” but still crazy and unsafe.

Many people (thankfully) drive impecably safe and law-abiding, but I don’t know if I would label them the “best driver.”

Yes, I believe I drive better than most other people. Sue me; I just do.

Sex is different entirely, though. I think I’m fantastic if you like my style, but I can’t say definitely “I’m a better lover than most people.” That’s like asking me if I have a better personality than most people. I don’t know. It depends on what kind of personality you like. Some people might think mine is terrible (they’d be wrong, of course ;)), but I like it, and have been lucky to find many people who like it as much as I do. Same applies to bedroom times.

As for poker, I don’t really play a lot, so I’m no good.

Above average driver and poker player. Twenty five accident free years driving, and I’ve avoided many accidents that would have been the result of another driver’s idiocy because I constantly practice defensive driving. As for poker, I used to play it for a living, so I think that counts as evidence.

I didn’t feel I had the right to answer the sex question - that determination belongs to my wife. However, I’m great in bed - I only occasionally fall out, and have yet to accidentally smother myself in my sleep. A success by any standard.

I’ve had women whom have reason to know what they’re talking about, and no motive to lie, tell me that I’m pretty damn good in bed. I’ll take that as ‘better than average.’

I don’t get in accidents, and I don’t get tickets, and I don’t collect dents, dings, and scrapes on my car - I guess that makes me about an average driver.

I suck at poker. I know the game just well enough to know I shouldn’t play. That most certainly makes me a below average player. :stuck_out_tongue:

Average at sex, lousy at both the others.

Come to think of it, if given the option to be lousy at two things and at least acceptable at one, I think that is how I would have chosen.

Regards,
Shodan

I have not been pulled over by the cops for over 35 years. In that respect I am a good driver. But I do the limit or 5 over which seems to infuriate the immature drivers I encounter. They do not appreciate my defensive driving. Tough.
