(This question’s been floating around in the back of my mind for quite awhile, and I didn’t know if it was more appropriate to GQ or Cafe Society)
Awhile back I watched the movie Kinsey and was struck about a scene later in the movie. Kinsey was excited to hold an interview with someone who had an extremely wide sexual experience, and had it well documented.
It took a turn for the worse when it was discovered he was ‘less than discriminate’ with his partners, with info on pre-pubescents, etc.
My question is: Was this based on an actual person? The movie mentioned he had (I may be mis-remembering this) something like 3000+ partners. I’m having a hard time believing a non-Wilt Chamberlain, non-celebrity could do something like that…at least not with that many consenting partners.
If you were willing to patronize prostitutes, of both sexes, I’d think there would be barely any limit at all to the number of sexual partners you could have. It’s believable to me, for sure. The only limit would be your money. And if you’re not very discriminating about who you pick, it could be more affordable than you’d think.
There was a bit of a brouhaha some years back when various pro-family & Christian groups claimed that Kinsey based his studies in childhood sexuality solely on Braun’s journals – it was mostly a political scuffle to get sex education removed from public schools.
The movie whitewashes things a bit by showing Kinsey reject the creepy pervo, whereas in reality he did cite Braun’s journals extensively. Still…squick.
Is there independant verification of Braun’s claims? Absent that, balancing off the likelihood of Braun’s claims against the likelihood he was just someone who liked to make stuff up, I know which I’d be betting on.
