OK, I can remember being told Monkey King stories by my chinese aunties, and so when I flipped on the TV and saw it was todays offering, I turned it on …
I am pretty disappointed in it, but probably going to watch it anyway.
Does it get any better than a modern businessman thinking he is being punished for the idea of a Pottery Soldier Theme park?
Is there perhaps a link to buying a better version of it that is at least subtitled made by some chinese guys that follows the real tales?
I’m pretty sure that what you want to look for is Journey to the West, which has been adapted roughly 18 bajillion times in China and Japan, and at least a handful in the West.
Western adaptations or translations frequently include the word ‘monkey’ in the title. Monkey (British dub of a Japanese TV series), Monkey: A Chinese Folk Tale (abridged translation of the novel), Monkey Magic (American animated TV series*), and so on.
But, boy, if the movie in question is supposed to be based on the JttW, it’s gone far enough afield to make Dragon Ball** look faithful.
Monkey Magic also happens to be the title of the opening theme of Monkey. I have no idea if this is a coincidence.
** Started as a comedic and modernized version of JttW - thus the lead being a monkey-boy named Son Goku, which is the Japanese version of Sun Wukong.
