SFC /SCANNOW Question

I am running SFC /SCANNOW and it occurred to me that I am using the original Windows XP Professional CD to replace any corrupted or missing files. What happens if it replaces a file from the original CD that was already replaced when I installed SP2?

I was about to berate you for asking about such an obvious question. They get overwritten, what do you think?

However, it maybe that the reinstall process is may be complex than I thought, and something else may happen, instead. In any case, I would highly recommend that you stop what you are doing (Assuming it is not too late, that is) and create a Slipstreamed Windows XP installation disk.

Oh Oh! I am a little late because it has already finished. I don’t know if it replaced anything because it doesn’t reveal anything that it might have done. Also, I do not have either Roxio nor Nero, but do have Sony CDExtreme which does make CD’s. I will watch for some kinds of errors and reinstall Windows XP Prof and SP2 if needed. In the meantime, I will try to make a slipstreamed XP CD.

Little Nemo, is that you? He had the same way of expressing surprise as you do.

Heh. You’ll have to re-install SP2, of course. (And some other patches probably too. Just go to Windows Update).

When I did support for this, there were certain circumstances where reverting in that manner would break the user’s internet connection (meaning re-installing SP2 was a bit tricky). In those cases we could do a bit of registry hacking to fix it, or you could order the free cd from Microsoft.

What I did was to create a slipstreamed installation disk, then I again ran SFC /SCANNOW against the slipstreamed disk. I think it found everything that I had undone with the original WIN XP disk and restored the files correctly. All seems to be OK now.
