I saw both these movies today. I thought both were great. Did anyone think otherwise?
i just watched titan a.e. a couple hours ago. personally i didnt really like titan a.e. because the dialogue was rather bland. i understand that this is a cartoon and is geared towards kids but i think even the kids in the theatre were not too entertained by the kindergarten-level dialogue. eh, maybe i judge some movies too harshly but dammit, i payed my $5.75 (after student discount) and expected better.
I like the 1971 version of Shaft better.
‘Shaft’ blew chunks! Who writes this crap?
I wasn’t going to see Titan A.E. until I read what Ebert had to say about it. Maybe I’ll give it a shot. Can anyone else vouch for it?

I agree, the new Shaft was nothing like the original. It was more Bruce Willish than Shaftish.
Despite the simple children-style dialogue, I thouroughly enjoyed Titan AE. I especially enjoyed being able to insert some quotes from Star Wars that would have perfectly fit into the movie…the people I was with were totally cracking up.
I saw titan A.E., and I didn’t think it was too bad. The animation mixed with the computer animation looked very impressive. I was also surprised that the script wasn’t tailored for kids. Not to say that it was for adults, but rather, pre-teens. I mean, words like jettison were used.
I too saw Titan AE. I rather liked it. And for the record, AE stands for After Earth. The dialogue wasn’t so impressive, nor was the plot, but the visuals were nice, there were a few intersting twists, and, best of all, the ending was the coolest I’ve ever seen. Of course, we have some inside jokes about that, but it was still great. So go see it, just go in the afternoon for a discount.
I just saw Titan AE with my 9-year old son. Overall, it was all right. My son dug it. I thought it was okay for a bargain matinee.
It would lose a ton on video. The graphics need to be seen on a big screen.
One word: Bob
hee hee
Titan A.E. sucked!!

The animation, except for the ice crystal scenes, would have been too embarrasingly bland even for the folks at Hannah-Barbera.
-
The plot was hackneyed - unwilling aliented hero, angry at his father’s apparent abandonment, brought to the side of good, and to fulfill his destiny, by spunky, attractive, and good-hearted woman? gimme a break.

What suprised me was the previews shown before Titan A.E. Half the audience was under age 8 and the previews were for things like “Blair Witch 2” and other very adult oriented films. Even the M&M’s commercial was over most of the audience’s head (“I’m not a cheerleader, I’m an athletic supporter!”)
Haven’t seen Shaft yet, but I thought Titan AE was worth seeing. The dialog was simple, but it didn’t make me bang my head against a wall like other movies have done (Godzilla pops to mind, but that’s an unfair comparison - nothing could be that bad again). And they kept the dialog to a minimum. I was actually surprised by the main plot twist, which is an unusual experience for me.
But even had the dialog been lifted from Teletubbies, the animation alone is well worth it. The hydrogen trees, the ice field, and the race with those space dolphins or whatever they were totally blew me away. And I really liked the fact that they used a more adult soundtrack rather than getting Elton John and Tim Rice to throw together some crap about how great it is to be human.
Go see it. And see it on the big screen, for sure.
I saw Shaft last night. I thought it was bitchin’. Granted, it wasn’t the most intelligent and thought provoking film I’ve seen, but it was fun. I think that’s what movies like that are supposed to be. The original films were classics because they were fun to watch and they were satifying. I think the new one holds up well against them. Lots of cheesy soul brother dialogue, and lots of ass kicking. Casting Richard Roundtree in his original role of John Shaft, private investigator, was brilliant, and seeing him talk about “getting that muthafucka” with Samuel L. Jackson (who plays his nephew of the same name, who is a loose-cannon cop), was great. The new Shaft is one baaaaad mutha-(shut your mouth!)
But I’m talkin’ 'bout Shaft!
