Shagnasty's topic ban?

Knowing how things have been going lately in my life*, I’m too worried that post will be misunderstood. I think it can easily come off as much more mean than I meant it to be. I was shooting for equivalent snark.

Let me try again, without trying to be snarky at all.

We care about this board, so of course we care if someone is trolling it. If you think we’re all just posting about stupid stuff that you don’t care to even read the titles, then of course you don’t really care one way or the other.

A troll is someone who is deliberately trying to piss people off for their own amusement. They add nothing to the board, and only try to make it worse. Allowing a troll to technically skate by is a bad idea.

I am hopeful that Shagnasty is not a troll, and that this is just a problem on a specific topic. He did say he loves “negative attention,” so I hope he doesn’t try to get it in some other way.

[sup]*Dad just got fired from a job for made up bullshit. Don’t know what we’re going to do.[/sup]

I am sorry to hear of your family’s troubles. I hope you’re able to pull yourself together soon.

Good luck.

I am not a troll BigT. I just have some strong opinions on a few things in the same way that you do and it pisses some people off even though I am sincere. You are the type of person that I was thinking of when I said I would happily go out to eat with even though we disagree on many things. There is no problem with that. I don’t expect most people to agree with me on some things.

You probably noticed that I don’t attack you either because I know you truly believe what you are saying. It takes all types to make the world go round. I don’t dislike any particular group, especially women. I just have strong opinions on modern, American style romantic relationships. Those don’t apply to friends, coworkers, bosses, family members or anyone else except for those involved.

I am sorry to hear about your father as well. Those things happen all too frequently unfortunately.

I am sorry to hear your probs Big T, good luck on that.
Back to the topic, I am glad Shag got a topic ban. That topic was just way out of control. Way TMI in my opinion. I tend to spew on and on about my family and pets, I try to keep it somewhat controlled. But, I think spewing about chasing women on the internet and all the ins and outs of your romantic or sexual conquests is just out of line.

Is Shagnasty spamming the boards with threads or is this a case of sheltering the benighted from their own Pavlovian impulses? A thread or two that are annoying are easily ignored.

I think it was a good decision. The poster in question was being more and more incendiary, probably knowingly, and responding to any disagreement or criticism with just upping the ante. And it certainly wasn’t the first time.

Then why not ban or suspend him? How does this differ from Pjen and Scottish Nationalism?

See this thread.

Some times, if you give someone enough rope, they inevitably tie it around their neck and, well, problem solved.

Agree.

That reflects more on those who feel an irrational compulsion to respond. What’s far more spammy on these boards is the tedious and immature Trump bashing. Topic ban that and bandwidth costs are halved.

I support topic bans in the general case … this is intended to address the repetitive nature of starting new threads by a poster … it can get disruptive and once it does become a problem I think a topic ban is effective in correcting it … the problem is too many threads, not necessarily the content of the threads …

Leaving the door open for unopposed Trump cheerleading?

Yep. I dont see the point here, his threads dont bother me at all. I can just not read them.

They usually do, yes.

I don’t think Trump bashing is anywhere close to what he deserves and our nation needs.

Just saying that whatever amount of triggering posts that Shagnasty makes on the subject of his dating prowess it’s dwarfed by the amount of ridiculous political hyperbole. But let’s take a proactive stance, to show the board cares!, against 2-3 potential future threads.

You’re clear on the difference between blogging and posting, right? Does this board owe anyone their own blogspace?

Of course not. However, a few of the forums are more less used for pointless/relatively unimportant topics. If these forums are used as intended and not spammed a couple related posts, even if unpopular, seem appropriate. I find the multiple posts on how to describe AHunter3’s identity, iirc, a bit redundant. My solution? Don’t contribute much to those threads. It’s very easy and everyone can do it.

Honestly, a topic ban means that the forum participants lack self control. They don’t like a thread yet have a compulsion to post in it? And as soon as someone else makes a thread discussing women Shagnasty can post as a normal poster in that thread. This seems like the product of discombobulated thinking.

But, ultimately, you are correct. Their playground and their rules.

If a pseudo “troll” starts a thread ever now and then that gets some peoples panties in a bunch…and the SDMB masses can’t resist the troll bait…that’s their own damn fault.

The mods aren’t dealing with the "troll"so much…its more like they are saving the other posters from their own stupidity, lack of self control and an inability to deal with their emotional reactions to points of view and topics that upset their special world view.
