Shall we dance? Songs that say so!

The Cool Jerk? The Humpty Hump?

Thanks, Eve – this is what’s stuck in my head now.

How about Little Eva and The Locomotion?

You mean when they danced to the song “Apache”?

Only Lindy hoppers will know this one, but the Shim Sham was a dance long before any of the songs that specifically mention it by name. In fact, it looks like the first song to be widely Shim Shammed to was written based on the timing of the dance.

I can’t believe nobody’s mentioned the “Hokey Pokey” yet.

Does the waltz count?

Clarifying, I was thinking of waltzes with lyrics, like this one: Tennessee Waltz. There are waltzes out there with lyrics older than that, but I can’t bring them up.

Bailamooooos! Let the rhythm take you over, bailamos!

Stroll
Watusi
Mashed Potato

Do the Gator - Root Boy Slim

You put your hand on your head
Put your foot in the air
Then you hop around the room
In your underwear
There ain’t never been nothin’ quite like this
Come on baby it’s The Wilbury Twist

Oh, well, just because it’s fun…

From here:

Oh, yeah, I always liked Hank Ballard’s version better. “Overtly sexual overtones” and alla that. What did they expect out of the group that made Work With Me Annie, Sexy Ways and Annie Had A Baby?

Oh, just remembered. Don’t know if this really counts, but:

I love it when you 1, 2 Step.

All these mentions of the Twist, and nobody remembers Twist and Shout? Originally written and recorded by the Isley Brothers, and then covered by some band on one of their early recordings?

How could I forget that? Twist and Shout is one of my faves too. The Mamas and the Papas had a great version later on as well.
