I was just listening to “Locomotion” on the radio, and now I’m wondering if there are any recent popular songs about dances.
Was that version of “locomotion” that came out in the mid 70’s the last of it’s kind?
The problem is that after about the 1960s and certainly after American Bandstand went off the air, the kids pretty much stopped naming dances.
There was the twist, then came things like the monkey and the watusi, which were made popular by shows such as American Bandstand, but since then everyone has been more or less free-styling. Sure there were broad trends such disco or line-dancing, but those were more general than one specific dance.
There have been popular songs about dancing.
Move for Me by Kaskade and Deadmau5 was a big hit a couple of years ago.
The last hit about a specific dance style that I can think of was
Vogue by Madonna from 2006(?). Although many claim that was just a ripoff of 1980s songs such as
Deep in Vogue
and
Waltz Darling by Malcolm Mclaren.
Did I really say Madonna’s Vogue came out in 2006?
That should be 1990.
Saturday Night came out in the 90s IIRC. It was very popular in discos where the crazy kids would do the dance. Never did get the hang of it myself #oldfogey
The Ketchup Song had a ‘hand jive’ style dance move for the chorus
Achy Breaky Heart had 'em up and bopping at weddings
Cos this is Thrilller, thriller night (what, was I the only one who danced??)
Steps (group) were very popular in the 90s and had dance routines for every one of their songs
One of the lamest I recall from post-2000 was in Terror Squad’s Lean Back (ft. Fat Joe). In the song it’s called “The Rockaway,” but I’ve only heard people describe it as “leaning back.” The description of the dance from Wikipedia’s article on the song is pretty succinct: “Fat Joe described the dance in the video as throwing back the right shoulder to the beat of the song.”
That’s it.
